Honoring Michael Reichmann
« on: May 22, 2017, 05:22:27 pm »

Just published an article honoring our friend Michael Reichmann who passed away a year ago. In addition, we have also published A Founders Page as a permanent way of remembering Michael with a gallery of his photos and a gallery of photos of him.  Please visit and enjoy.  And, don't forget to click on the link to view the Blooper Reel to remember the humor, fun, and laughs we all had with Michael.  I miss my friend!

Good job Kevin. I think of Michael every time I look at my camera. And more often than that. Amazing the feeling of connection you can build through virtual contact.

What a great way to honour and remember an excellent photographer, but more than that, a great man. Well done.

Great remembrance Kev. I loved the story about the car keys sliding down the table, so like Michael. :)
Thanks for putting up such a kind remembrance.

Good article.  I feel I am getting long in the tooth.  I remember exchanging views with Michael about the Imacon Photo scanner I had at the time just purchased (as he had done).  It cannot have been long after LuLa had started.  I am glad I finally met him at his Toronto studio a few years back - he paid for lunch and we chatted about various things.  It was a memorable trip, now tinged with sadness...

A nice set of portraits (both candid and posed) and a fitting tribute to someone who made a mark (directly or indirectly) on all our lives. Thanks Kevin.

I never met or interacted with Michael Reichmann in any way directly, but always enjoyed stopping by LuLa to learn about something new. Going through the orange/green on black tables of articles that served as an archive of contents before the site redesign ( like this! https://web.archive.org/web/20120520211828/http://luminous-landscape.com/essays/index.shtml ), there was always something new to find and learn about from a guy who was straight-to-the-point and trustworthy. It was great to explore without having something in mind beforehand, or if I didn't know what I didn't know...

As a fellow Canadian I always felt a stronger bond to the site than others because of the familiar locations, and mannerisms that made starting in photography feel more accessible to me.

I'll always be grateful to MR for starting up the site, and to Kevin and Chris (and now Debra as well) for keeping it going with new things to learn and share.

I actually cried the day I found out. And I get a knot in my throat whenever I found an image like the one with the penguin hat. My God, he was so fun. I miss him so much, specially his videos with Jeff, which were hilarious. I cherish those moments like it was my family.

Great Job, Kevin.

BTW, small correction, on the announcement post, you signed Kevin Raber, May 2018.

Great articles... Great way to remember Michael... I arrived late to photography, around 2009... But those LLVJ that I discover around 2011 were one of the sources where I always remember that helped to progress me a lot... He for sure will be remembered for years to come

I met Michael once, in the early 2000s, on one of his foto workshops, a fall-colors trip in the Smoky Mountains.  Our two vehicles of fotogs had been at an ancient schoolhouse and home; we left the area thru a large meadow and stopped in it.  Michael popped out and started pointing at possible foto setups all around us.  ALL the students--but me--piled out, got their gear, and started working, with Michael meandering among us, encouraging, answering questions, etc.  I didn't see a thing worth getting my gear for, but eventually, I saw a dead tree at what might have been a hundred yards or so away.  Well...without much enthusiasm I got my stuff out, mounted my longest lens (a Canon 100-400), and shot the tree a few times.  It wasn't until I was home that I finally 'saw' that tree, and it turned into this...

...my most-popular image.

Michael helped me to see; thank you very much, sir.  May you rest in piece.

Thanks for this . . .   Important to remember those who have had such an impact on our lives for the good.  Equally important to have a permanent marker "here" so that as time passes and new members partake, they have the opportunity to meet and acknowledge the person who had the vision and energy to make it happen.  I'd like to see a permanent link to the Founder's Page on LULA's home page.  Front and center . . .

Each unexpected splash of light along the way often brings a smile of recognition as I see again Michael's genuine joy of light. I thank him often for all he shared along the way.

I would not claim to have known Michael well but we met on several occasions, ate in each others homes a few times times and had a number of long discussions about various things both photographic and in his last year about the ups and downs of his cancer.
Having worked for many years in Cambridge (England) in its' rather special University community I have had the good fortune to meet and work with many fascinating and accomplished people. Michael was without doubt among the most well rounded and balanced and charming of the people I have met. His knowledge and understanding went far beyond things photographic but within that field he shared his knowledge and understanding with generosity and modesty and his judgement with a light touch and gentle humour - but with unflinching honesty and impartiality.
As I say I knew him only a little but, I think that like many of us, I miss his deft touch in giving our community sage advice and judgement - and perhaps the measure of him is that, personally, I miss his contributions more rather than less with the passing of time.

I never met Michael but back when I went digital I had not a single clue how to make a photograph with my Canon 1D, Photoshop and my newly acquired Epson printer.  I stumbled upon Lula and Michael's tutorials and it was only then that I started to put it all together.  I'd watch the tutorials time and again, often enlarging the screen to see what exact settings he was using then transferring those to my computer.  I was tremendously grateful to Michael and Chris for the guidance and signed up for the Lula cds to show my gratitude.  We exchanged a few emails and I've been a big fan ever since.
