590 NM Infrared annoying White Balance issue
« on: May 20, 2017, 12:15:53 pm »

Hello Everyone,

I am shooting with a 590nm converted Sony A7M2. I shoot both jpg and raw. I use the Adobe DNG profiling tool for custom white balance settings on my raw files (pulling the white balance slider all the way back on the tool).

The thing is even though I use the custom color profile created with the adobe tool the white balance is never the same as the jpg of the same shot. Jpg seems to be correct (the in camrea custom white balance) but the raw profile is never the same. I always have to play with with hue saturation in photoshop to make it look similar to the white balance of the jpg (of course after channel swap).

This is not a big issue since I can play with the hue satuaration but is kind of annoying and I am trying to figure out what am I doing wrong. The difference between the jpg (in camere white balance) and the raw with the custom profile is huge.

Kind Regards,
Emre

No Adobe program has the WB range capability required for color IR.  There is a video about that on the Lifepixel site.  C1 Pro can white balance these shots as can most of the manufacturer provided RAW converters.  In your case, you could just use the free Sony only version of Capture One to white balance and generate a TIF to finish in Photoshop.

Thanks a lot E.J.! Does your comment includes the profile created by DNG Profile Editor? In many of the tutorials people create color profiles using this tool (I also do) and increase the WB range then use the profile created in Lightroom / Photosohop.

I will be experimenting with Capture one as well.

Kind Regards,

I've never tried that so I can't say for sure but in the color IR world, it's pretty well known that Adobe products in general can't properly WB color IR.

I have just tried Capture One Express for only WB and  it is far easier to set the WB. I also dont know why I loved the overall colors in Capture one. I think my workflow will change from now on to Capture One (Raw Edit) + Export Tiff + PS for advanced processing.

Thanks a lot!

That's exactly what I do for bot IR and visible spectrum photography and the better you get a C1, the less you will be doing in PS itself.
