UK air travel: Practical solutions
« on: August 14, 2006, 12:26:30 pm »

The other thread on this topic covers the whole airport security landscape, so I'm trying to start one just for practical problem-solving.

I'll be leaving in 2 weeks from US for the Wainwright coast-to-coast hike (Cumberland-Yorkshire).  Unfortunately booked via Heathrow instead of Manchester.   Plan to use a bulky 5D & 24-105.

I've also considered buying Michael's preferred Panasonic LX1 pocket camera to use instead - easy to pack safely in checked baggage.  But apparently they're right between models, with a new one coming out in September that tackles the noise problem.  So I decided not to go this route.

If cabin-baggage restrictions continue, I've concluded from what I've read that the best solution is to FedEx the large camera with 'serious' bubble-wrap to my point of departure - the advantage being that I can insure for full value.

The hitch will be packing & FedEx-ing it back again - staying in small towns & then getting to London on a Saturday afternoon.   Haven't figured this part out yet!

FedEx is expensive. From UK to Stockholm, Fedex costs twice as much to send my kit as it does me! And the pain of having to wait for a delivery guy to turn up...arrgh!

Situation has eased:

OK to take a briefcase-sized carry-on, & electronics are no longer verboten.  So my camera & zoom lens, packed separately in bubble-wrap with rubber bands around them, will be travelling in the bottom of my briefcase.  Whew.
