Very dramatic. Very effective restricted colour palette.

Dark and mysterious, I like it. Not sure about including the big tree stump on the right, it just gives a large black mass.

Thank you Paulo, Graeme, and Francois for your comments and critiques. They help me a lot !
The large black mass on the right side is the tree's root ball. I'm hoping it lends some tragedy to the feeling. But maybe it doesn't ?
Just trying to tell what's happening. Will keep plodding on.

Good seeing, Richard. The cloud and tree are nicely linked. I like the water.

Scott,
Glad you like this.
I also found the tree and cloud relationship interesting.
And was lucky enough to be there right then to photograph it.

I like it. I have sympathy with the objection to the root ball, though: it's a very large blob.

I'm impressed by the dynamic range.

Thanks Kikashi and Maddogmurph for your comments.

Here's an alternative version where I used the blending mode to give a little detail to the root ball (aka: the blob).
Curious to know what you think.

This foto's from a Sigma Foveon. Not known for it's wide DR. But at low ISO it does OK.

Thanks.

Hi Chris,

I like your new version. Interesting how you made the background stronger. My mistake was not bracketing the scene and getting more detail in the deep shadows.

I'm a big fan of your vibrant bird fotos. I get to see many of the same species here in S.E. LA.

Thanks.
