Platen gap Epson p800
« on: April 03, 2017, 06:22:23 am »

HI guys.

I did print a black and white image on mat paper for the first time today.

The paper is Canson Infiniti edition etching rag.
And the print look good indeed but those  weel marks are bloody ugly.

I using image print 10 on a windows machine..

Is it possible to change platen gap on the printer!? I have looked but can't find it.

Or do I don't that in imageprint?

  cheers

I can't respond on ImagePrint - don't use it. However, in the Epson driver itself you have a choice of standard or wide. You may also wish to check the paper thickness setting as some of those marks may be very mild head strikes - it's hard to tell from your images. Some of the lines look as if they are spaced at regular intervals perhaps corresponding with paper feed rollers, while others look like a less orderly scruffiness. If your images had more contrast it may be possible to diagnose with more certainty.

Not sure if Imageprint can control the platen gap.

Also, as Mark suggested there might be a little more going on.  If that is the 310 gsm version of the paper, it's pretty thick.  The paper thickness should probably be increased from .3 to .5mm, maybe even .6.  Also not sure if that can be controlled through imageprint.

Another possible factor - did you load the paper through the top tray or the Front Fine Art feed?

Hi Mark. I did load the Paper from the rear feeder. The top one the one you pull out and up.

That might be your whole problem. The paper is too thick for that feeder, and if you do it often enough, according to Epson it damages the printer. You need to use the Front Fine Art feeder. Try that and see whether you get the same markings.

The product sheet for this paper states: paper thickness 0.479 mm. So in the printer setting in minimum of 0.5 mm should be set.

Hi Mark.

I tried to load the media trough the fine art feder.
The wheel marks disappeared but now i have a even more ugly marks.

On the left side of the print this shows.

All nozzles are working, i did a nozzle check before I did the print

Maybe I did ruin the printer then..

Was the sheet perfectly flat before printing?

Hi Daniel,

Firstly, nice work on your website.

Those marks look as if they could be head strikes, but head strikes usually have a more "grating" appearance. Given the thickness of the paper you are using, IF you have the platen gap set to Wide AND paper thickness set to say 5 or 6 AND you are using the Front Fine Art feed, and still getting those kind of results I think it is time to call Epson for a discussion.

Sorry I'm not near the printer driver and won't be till some time tomorrow. Perhaps if you have the P800 manual (detailed version) you will be able to find the information there.

On a Windows machine, in the Printing Preferences dialog there is a box labeled "Paper Config."
Clicking on it brings up another menu with several settings, including "Paper Thickness" (in 0.1mm untis; default is "3", or 0.3mm),
and Platen Gap (choices are "Standard" and "Wide.")

I have no idea whether Imageprint even uses the standard Epson menu. If it doesn't, it should provide an alternative.

The printing preference then page config screens in Windows 7 leads to "paper thickness" which is only adjustable to 1, 3, 5, and 15. I am quite nervous about what this really means in terms of 0.1mm units.

I think Eric just explained this above. The next step is to verify the thickness of your paper and perhaps best to select the setting that is the next one above the stated paper thickness. If your paper thickness is stated in units other than mm, you can use an on-line converter to get a calculation taking you from the units in which the paper is quoted to mm, and once you know the mm, based on Eric's advice above, you know what setting to use. I can't speak to what settings Windows or other printing applications allow. I'm on OSX, and whatever the printer driver contains is directly accessible through Photoshop or Lightroom printing modules.
