Vancouver Island Rainforest in the Spring
« on: March 31, 2017, 04:47:15 pm »

I have been photographing spring in the rainforest on Vancouver Island for 8 years. The timing is crucial to get the right balance between the rich vibrant spring moss and the maple trees not leafing out. Once the maples leaf out the forest gets very dark.

This is not an easy place to shoot, the forest is extreme chaos. It is a composition challenge, and it takes a long time to find a spot to setup your tripod. The ground is very uneven, which makes it tough just getting around in the forest.

I hope you find these images interesting and get a sense for the challenge of photographing in a rainforest.

A very fine set of images.
Every one is better than any that I got on one short visit to Vancouver Island several years ago. Clearly you used your familiatity with the place and seasons very well.

Thanks Eric and JNB. Many years of hiking into spots in the rainforest has allowed me to find my spots for compositions. Its not an easy spot to shoot large panoramic scences.

I love these photos. How difficult is it to get there and hike around? I am thinking about a trip possibly next spring.

Thank you. Its not difficult to hike around, it can be slow going as you are hiking through the rainforest. The areas I go into have no trails. Some of the roads require 4wd. There is a backcountry map for Vancouver Island which would be essential.
