Which old camera is better to use?
« on: March 28, 2017, 02:28:33 am »

Hello,
I am a complete amateur when it comes to cameras so I'd like to ask for your opinions. I'll be going to Seoul this summer so I wanted to borrow a camera from my relative. But she'll be using her newly-bought camera on the period of my travel, which is why I can only settle to borrowing her older cameras. I only want to use it to take good photos and videos, just for memories. If possible, I'd also like to have some of the good shots developed.
The older cameras that she have is the GE E1480W, Olympus SP-550UZ, and Nikon Coolpix S1100pj. I tried comparing them in CNET but I couldn't understand anything at all. Which camera do you think I should bring with me? Or should I just stick to my Huawei Honor 6 smartphone?
Thanks

I didn't get the right answer from the internet.

Hi, Steve,

Not familiar with any of them, though a quick Google shows the Olympus is from 2007, the GE maybe from 2011 (?), and the Nikon from 2010. They are all basic point and shoot cameras with very small sensors.

At first I was going to suggest taking the most recent, but given the choices I'd take the Nikon. I was also going to suggest that any of these would be better than your phone, but even that may not be true given their age and recent smartphone advances.

Any chance you could borrow the Nikon for a few weeks and shoot with it before your trip? That would help a lot in getting the best photos when you do get to Seoul. This review has some details on the camera that might help: http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/nikon_coolpix_s1100pj_review/

Good luck and have a great trip.

Checking out the specs it seems your phone is much better than any of the cameras listed, the only think lacking is a zoom. For that I also suggest taking the Nikon with you. Your phone will probably be your main camera, but the Nikon is compact enough that you can fit it in a pocket and use it when needed.

I second Ken and advise you to get some experience with the Nikon before the trip, so you'll know the controls and quirks and won't miss out on pictures.
