Long USB Cable for 5D
« on: August 02, 2006, 06:51:08 pm »

I was told today by a camera store that the longest USB cord I tether my 5D with is a 10ft.
Said that the 12 and 15 ft cables are too long and you will have an inconsistent connection.

Whats the consensus here?

I'd really like a cable longer than 10 ft if its feasible.
But I don't want to deal with a poor connection either.

I've really only dealt with Firewire tethered cameras.
15ft cables are the fine with Firewire.

If the cable is built to spec, then the maximum length is 5 m (~16 ft).

For longer connections, you need a hub/powered extension.

I would just like to add that the product you could look for is often called an active USB cable. This link is provided as an example (I don't know anything about the company or this product specifically):

I have used two full length cables like this plus one standard cable (not active) connected to my 5D  with no problems. (The same can be done for Firewire-cables which I use for my 1DsII, also with no problems.)

I think the Canon 5D has an option that allows you to shoot without cables to your computer. Anyone know about that?

The Canon Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E1 - it does WiFi b/g and cabled ethernet. More details in the article on Rob Galbraiths. Works with all modern Canon cams (20D, 30D, 5D, 1DII,1DsII, etc..) not sure if it supports the 300D/350D, etc and older models such as the 10D, 1V, EOS-3, etc...

The limitation on USB cable length has to do with the USB standards for signal timing and the type of cable used.  This basically means that the longest cable length you can have between a hub and a device is 5 metres.

However, as the hub regenerates the signal timing, you can daisy chain hubs to a maximum depth of 5 devices, or 25 metres.

The "active usb cable" mentioned before basically contains a single port hub in the end, so it provides the electronics to regenerate the signal.

There are also USB-to-fibre devices that will allow you to work USB over a much longer distance with fibre optic cable.
