Colour, mono, reprocess or bin.
« on: March 19, 2017, 01:20:50 pm »

This is Castle Stalker mid way between Oban and Glen Coe in Scotland. Monty Python fans may recognise it as "The Castle of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh". Any comments welcome. Ken

My choice would be the mono, but they are both nice.

Prefer the color version by far. It already has a distinct "grayness" to it due to the sky and its mirror, which makes the complementary yellowish and green color stand out nicely. I would consider retouching the white buildings out, so that part could become a little lighter green patch as well.

The bw version seems quite a bit darker overall, would be interesting to see a lighter version.

1 followed by 2 but definitely not 3

I would say the bw is more striking, very graphic in look and style. However, I love the natural glow of light in the water in the colour version, which I think is the feature that really draws you in.

Both good but I agree with Eric: the B&W has a definite edge.

I'd print them, stick both on the wall and live with them for a while. You'll develop a preference.

I like both, with a preference for the mono version.

Thank you all for your thoughts and comments. I have changed both images a little. The mono has been lightened overall and some of the deep shadows lightened. The colour version has had the dark shadows on the LHS lifted and the bright buildings darkened plus a few other tiny tweeks. I will live with them for a while and see which I prefer. For me, presently, it is the colour version but the mono will probably do better in competitions where the images have 4-5 secs to impress, a bit like speed dating on steroids. Ken

Do as Jeremy suggests and see which one wears the best.

As for me, I'm fickle. Right now, I favor the color version. But tomorrow, who knows?

I still want more light in the BW.

Notice how the castle stands out more in the colorversion, even though the sky is equally dramatic? I don't think the darker sky in the BW version adds anything, but it does take away from the main subject, imo.
