An amazing portrait, which raises all sorts of questions.
Identifying the flower she is named for doesn't quite answer all of them.

She does look quite serene in her work and lifestyle. I've noticed a similar serenity on the faces of shepherds in Umbria.

Great portrait. She looks like she has had a hard life but is still joyful.

Eric - Goa never did have the kind of grinding poverty seen elsewhere in India. Although the rural Goan poor did not enjoy the comforts and conveniences of life and had to exert their limbs for a living, everyone had enough food and a roof over their head. She also comes from one of the earliest settler tribes, traditionally involved in farming. I saw her cross the road with her cattle as we were driving by and knew I had to take her portrait. It took a lot of cajoling (these are very shy folk) but eventually she agreed to pose.

"....lot of cajoling (these are very shy folk)"

Yes, that is palpable on many levels, hence vigilance; her history as herder, writ beautifully in the map of her visage, and of you, a choice considered~ it is why, for me it is so much a "portrait".
