Tuscany in April
« on: February 27, 2017, 12:11:26 pm »

A shot from a few years ago on a nice morning with a bit of fog and nice light. Shot at 135mm on a 1Ds III. An example of shooting with a longer lens and isolate what otherwise could not be shot. It may just be a recording of the scene :)

My wife and I spent six weeks in Tuscany and Umbria in 2005, just after I retired. That seems to me to be a perfect time of year for photography there. I do hope to get back some day.

Thanks for sharing this lovely scene (even if it wasn't with your 11mm.   ;)  )

The light is indeed spectacular. It sculpts the rolling hills of Tuscany so well… it's almost 3D.

A really pretty image Hans!
The light is indeed spectacularly beautiful.

Pardon me for making a bit of technical comment but I am fascinated how effective the burning of the green hills in the foreground is as part of the overall image.
It really works but it is a bit unusual in the sense that often one is looking to maximise foreground detail in most landscape images.

Thanks for the comments. For Tony: The way I shoot landscapes depends on the scene in front of me. Sometimes it is about having a prominent foreground that I will maximize interest in, but at other times it is like this picture where it is about the play of light and the shapes running through the images and round it off with clouds and the far hills. So when I shoot a landscape I will look at what to isolate and how to frame it. If possible I will position myself for that or select a focal length so I can capture what I find interesting. Sometimes it lasts such a short time that I have no way to reposition myself. Other examples from the same morning. The first attached was shot 5 minutes earlier and the second 10 minutes earlier and the 4rd 5 minutes later that the posted picture. On the first attached picture there is a very busy road running between the foreground road and the background hills :) It is completely hidden.

Thanks for the explanation Hans - I considered most of the possibilities that you mentioned - but obviously given the results of the burning in the foreground I couldn't be sure which, if any, applied.

I look forward to seeing more images from you given your interesting approach to landscape.

Happy shooting

Thanks again.

And of course, what is Tuscany Val d'Orcia without Belvedere. Two shots from the same week. 70mm and 160mm respectively.

I'm running a workshop in the Dolomites beginning of April and was going to drive to Tuscany after I had finished the few days. I think this post has made up my mind to do so.
