Early morning Hadrian's wall
« on: January 30, 2017, 04:11:29 pm »

Weather forecast promised a soft, frosty and misty sunrise. 20 minutes before dawn clouds rolled in and stayed. Managed a b&w any comments? Ken

The sky supports the composition, good one.

Great subjects, view, framing - and the aspect ratio of frame. I'm not sure about processing is helping any of it though - especially in the mid-ground just before the trees - a bit hot there. That lightest spot typically draws the eye and it's not really so interesting that area. As well, there is a bit of dull evenness/slight choppiness to the gray tones throughout - which takes away focus.  I would look at toning that bright spot down and bringing "some" contrast/brightness to the areas of the wall/contours in the foreground - especially on the right. When first looking at this I wondered if the color version was successful?

Thanks for the comments from everyone aspecially Brandt's. Processed using Silver Efex on a laptop. I have redone it from scratch not using Silver Efex and whilst agreeing with you about the hot area being buninteresting on my second go it is slightly brighter with a bit more detail and most of the grey "veiling" has gone. I will live with this version for a day or 2 and get used to it and where it directs the eyes then re-read your comments. The colour version is incredibly flat. Lots of mist with rain in the air and a hoped for sunrise that just did not occur. This shot was 10 minutes after the supposed sunrise. Ken

The reworked version is definitely an improvement.

Looks like the Hound Of The Baskervilles will appear any moment (goes for either version)
 Very nicely done!!

Excellent, although I prefer the first version as the lighter area in the mid-ground on the second version, looks a little blown out on my screen (yes Slobodan, I finally bought a new and much improved laptop), but even with my new computer, I suppose it could still be my screen rather than your image.

Went back this morning to see if the promised early morning frost and mist would give me a soft, colourful sunrise. Not soft but still worth getting up at stupid o'clock. Ken

That's very fine, too.
And I like your reprocessed version of the first.

I like both the color and the B&W versions. Actually, I feel like they convey different moods with the color being more friendly/warm and the B&W colder.
Bravo!

I absolutely love monochromatic landscapes, but I much prefer the colour version in this particular case. In part, it is because the light is better in the colour version (IMO). In part, because I think the colour adds to creating stronger shapes, and even helps with the textures. I also prefer the shift in perspective which shows more of the rock face on the right hand side.  I think it is a very fine landscape.

Very beautiful images! Thanks for sharing...

I still like the first one best. ( + a bit darker even better - for me that is)
The colour version is beautiful but in this case not ideal for creating the atmosphere i would choose...
