new to epson 9600
« on: July 23, 2006, 06:19:59 am »

HI - just brought an epson 9600 second hand. Can anybody help me with the following questions, since im a virgin to using epson and used to Hp printers instead:

- When I print, the colours come out all wrong and are nothing like what is on the screen - is this due to colour management? Do you know how I can change this? On HP I can collaborate the colours, but there doesnt seem to be anything like this on epson
- I will be mainly printing on canvas, however with the epson canvas rolls they seem to have a raised yarn/fabric, so when printed on the ink can easily be scratched off. On the HP printer I used a stretchable canvas which was flat to touch and prevented scratches, was slightly water resistant and helped against cracking when folded. Does anyone know of a good canvas I can use with the epson 9600 which has the same qualities but is also light fast?
- When I print I seem to always get extra paper at top and bottom approx 16" on each - does anyone know how I can print without any excess media.

Thank you for your help!

Simple answer is to do a lot of online research on the Epson LF forum.

To address two of your issues:

1) Your color issues are almost certainly color management related. Epson printers really require you print using custom profiles from within your printing software and turn all Epson internal color management OFF.  Epson has a set of profiles made by Bill Atkinson on their download page that are very good.  I suggest you start with those, but make sure you know how to print using a profile first.

2) Canvas flaking is common, especially on un-coated material.  The coated is better, but still prone to flaking.  Almost everybody who prints on canvas also sprays on a protective over-coating like Bullfrog or Kamar varnish.

The 9600 is a great printer and when using custom profiles for material like canvas and fine-art papers, it does not give up very much at all to the new x800 machines.

Cheers,

1) You can find Bill Atkinson's profiles at Epson's website by simply following the links to drivers and support for the 7600/9600. The actual http web address is absurdly long, but it's easy to navigate there.
2) Try setting the printer hardware buttons to "autocut on"; this will minimize the paper or canvas wastage, and if you set the printer driver (software) to "autocut off", it won't try cutting your canvas with the puny built-in blade.

As said above, the drivers, firmware updates and paper profiles are all on Epson's website -- here is the 9600 with UC ink link: [a href=\"http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=14427&prodoid=19302858&infoType=Downloads&platform=All]http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support...ds&platform=All[/url]

My Epson 9600 Diary is a ressource that many people find one of the most comprehensive on the web:
