« on: July 22, 2006, 05:23:17 am »

Hi, every one. This is my post here.
Next month I'm going for the firt time in Africa - Marakesh.
I know it will be hot, but I don't know is there any special preparations I need to make.
My intension is to shoot on film. I will take my digital body also, but I want to shoot on film.
Any advice will help.
Thanx

First, if you're shooting film, don't check it with your baggage. The powerful x-ray scanners used for checked bags are very strong and even lead bags for your film are very questionable. Unprotected film will be fogged.

Keep all film on your person in a clear plastic bag so it can be visually checked by security. Tell them it's ASA 800 or 1600 and it's extremely sensitive. Obviously, don't let them scan the film with your carry-on bags.

I used to FedEx my exposed film back to myself, but I don't know if they are also x-raying this stuff today.

Consider, and I mean only consider, having your film processed on location. My reservation is that your going to a locale where good processing is rare if available at all.

Now, as an aside, x-ray scanning has no  effect upon digital memory cards. I heard that one fellow returning from Safari decided to keep the Compact Flash cards in his pants pocket and walk through security. This would not have been a problem had he not been chosen to be hand searched using that wand that they wave around your body. This search wand emits a magnetic field strong enough to pick up metal beltbuckles and the like. It WILL affect the stored files on a CF memory card. It totally screwed up all the files in his pocket. He would have been OK if he had sent the CF cards down the conveyor belt and had them scanned by x-ray. Moral: don't let that magnetic wand anywhere near your digital camera, media storage cards, or your laptop's hard drive for that matter.

I cannot believe we still get the hoary old chestnuts about x-rays and film.
It probably makes sense not to check any film into the hold, although I have done so in the past without deleterious effects. Much has been made of the latest CT type scanners for hold baggage, which do use higher levels of radiation. However, this type is unlikely to be ecountered except in the airports of wealthy, developed countries.
So carry film on and let it go through the hand baggage scanners. Nobody has ever shown significant fogging from these machines and I know numerous other photographers who have long since stopped worrying about this. Personally, I do not think it is worth the very considerable aggro of trying to persuade airport personnel to hand inspect film, especially not in Morroco. If anybody would like to question my qualification to comment on this, I would simply point out that I am a radiologist. Buying and processing film in Morocco is not something I would recommend.
Marrakesh will be very hot at this time of year. There will be opportunities to photograph people on the Djemma el F'naa, but make sure you agree a price first

Thanx for all info about airports and scanners.
Yes, it will be hot.
Is there anything special about handling the equipment and films in such hot weather?
Anything to worry about?

Not really. Probably a good idea to use fresh film and have it developed as soon as you come back. Take a bit of care in Marrakesh as I am sure petty thieves operate in the busier areas. If you get the chance, visit the Majorelle gardens (no tripods allowed) and try and get a trip over the high Atlas. It will be a lot cooler up there and there is a lovely ruined Kasbah at Telouet.

Hi

I had a great time in Marrakech in December 2005. You can read an article, with some tips, about my trip on my web site: http://www.vanruitenbeek.com/artmarrakech.shtml

If you go to the galleries page and click on the Morrocan flag you get all the pictures from that trip (the ones I thought good enough to put on my website I mean...  )

I am sure you'll have a great time. Marrakech is a place I will go back to and I'll stay in the same place if I can.
