RG CF/SD database updated
« on: July 21, 2006, 10:41:03 am »

Rob has updated his excellent CF/SD performance database for the 30D, 5D, 1D Mark II and IIn and 1Ds Mark II, and Nikon D200.  Based on a quick look, the Ridata 150x 8GB at $169 from http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com appears to be a pretty compelling sweet spot on the performance x capacity x cost curve.

The card on mydigitaldiscount appears to be an older/slower version of the Ridata card, which is not tested on the RG site.

That said I'm not sure if it matters all that much for some of us whether we have a 40x/80x/133x/150x card.

I've never filled the buffer on my 5D, right now I use a 512mb lexar 80x card, a 1GB Lexar 80x card, and a Hitachi 4GB microdrive (slow).

Because of the huge buffer I can't see any noticeable difference in performance between any of the cards.   I'd have to shoot a huge # of images to actually get to the point where I was limited but how fast the buffer could be emptied into the card.

I guess I might run into it if I was shooting sports in RAW mode but that is not something I am likely to do.. quality isn't necessarily as critical there & with the # of shots taken I would be very reluctant to want to go through the workflow to shoot RAW.

Never mind.. I visit the site again and now the 150x Ridata card is there.

How Trustworthy is MyDigitalDiscount?   I'm going to order one of these cards assuming they are trustworthy, I've never heard of this company before.

MDD is very trustworthy and provides exemplary service.  I've bought from them many times and always been well satisfied.  More than once they've gone above and beyond the call for me.  Highest recommendation.

I do shoot sports in RAW, and 8GB is an average soccer match for me.  Clearing the buffer quickly can be critical to getting the next shot, and card performance really does matter.

I usually come home from a match with between 1000 and 1500 RAW frames.  I can have them culled down to a hundred or so keepers, cropped, rotated, corrected and up on the web in about two hours.  I'm really not sure how I could do it any faster shooting jpg's, and given that I'm very often pushing underexposed ISO 3200 images, the quality would suffer.
