Regarding ink in Refurbs...I recently received a replacement P800 under warranty.  It came in a box that had Refurb printed on it, but was taped up and looked in all other ways like a brand new unit.  And it came with all new, full sized, not installed cartridges.

That's great. WHen I had my frustrating (for me) and expensive (for them) serial 4900 replacement nightmare. I encouraged them many times to not ship the printer with the carts installed. They said that they had to install the carts for the final test, and that they had no way to clean the printer out after that. Looks like they solved that problem.

Jim,
It is quite possible that I received a new unit as warranty replacement even though it was shipped in a Refurb box.  It seems reasonable that for a true rehab, a final test print is needed before they can resell it.

My 3880 was a refurb and came with no carts installed and dry lines.

IMO, if you're Epson and you're doing factory refurbishing, you can afford to drain and clean the lines before shipping the printer out.
