Canon 24-105/4 L II
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:07:44 pm »

Has anyone here had any experience of this lens? Is it worth buying, given that (a) I already have the first version and (b) I really like the focal length range?

Here is a look at MTF from lensrentals. You might want to skip to conclusion. I have no personal experience other than with the old version.

in addition to lensrentals.com, photozone.de and the digital picture reached the conclusion that it it is not worthwhile replacing the old 24-105 with the new

since i had one on order (and wasn't really sure what condition my 24-105 was in), i let it come and shot my imatest target. center resolution of the new was less than the old at almost every focal length and aperture.  edges and corners about the same except wide open at 105 f4 where the new one was symmetrical and the old one is not.  for the improved coating and IS i also decided it was not worth money.

i then ordered the 24-70 f4 which i have kept.  center is a bit sharper than the 24-105 at 70mm wide open as are the edges at all focal lengths - stopped down there's not much between the two. for my use as a travel lens the macro mode and improved IS are useful - and i will no longer take the wide open shots at 105 that i were often disappointing (although i will miss the added length).  so i kept it but am also keeping the old 24-105 as it doesn't have much market value.

size, weight, and reports of sample variation issues decided me against the Tamron 24-70

maybe Canon will have the wisdom to try again sooner rather than later for a 24-105 or 70 f4 worthy of the 5D4 and r.

Thanks, both. I shall stick with the one I have, I think. I imagine I won't have too much difficulty finding something else on which to spend my money!

FYI, Sigma are rumoured to be readying a release of a 24-70 f/2.8 Art lens - performance much improved over their 'poor' 24-105 f/4. I know it's short at the long end but if it's a match for the IQ of their latest releases and an improvement over the Canon equivalent, particularly on a 50MP+  sensor, it may be of interest to you.

Just a heads-up.
Oh, and all best for 2017.

Thanks. I'm always interested in new lenses, but I don't see myself buying one of those: I don't particularly need f2.8, with the additional size and weight that will inevitably bring, and I really like the longer end of the 24-105 range.

Oh, and all best for 2017.

And to you.

Take a look at this review also http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-STM-Lens.aspx

There is also a comparison tool so you can judge differences to other lenses.

The 24-105 f/variable STM lens is a kit lens and video lens (due to the stm)

Maybe you already found the right one, sorry for the wrong link. Here it is http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-4L-IS-II-USM-Lens.aspx

There is also a DxO test here https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-F4L-IS-II-USM-lens-review-Updating-a-classic

I was considering buying the lens but after the reviews I have decided not to. It takes too much resolution away from the 5DSR.

My RSS reader just flashed up a dpreview gallery on the new lens.

Taken on a 5D Mark IV - both jpeg and RAW downloads ...

Hans, thanks, I did find it. I was wondering whether to replace my trusty 24-105/4 L IS with the new one. I think the answer is a definite no.

Sigma's and Canon's recent efforts really just show how hard it is to make a 24-105mm lens and, all things considered, how incredibly good the original Canon 24-105 is.

A zoom going from UWA to medium telephoto is much more optically challenging than a pure telephoto, such a a 70-200, 100-400 or 150-600. The 4.4x zoom range is also much greater than on other wide-angle zooms. Not only that, but the range of focal lengths involved requires both a retrofocus design at the short end, changing to a telephoto design at the long end. You don't need the same compromise to make a 24-70 or a 70-200.

This is probably why we haven't seen a 24-105 f/2.8 yet. You could build it, but it would be big and heavy. Since it doesn't replace the 70-200 in the kit, most people would also have to carry that around. And anyone willing to carry that much weight around is probably after a bit better image quality than a 24-105 can deliver.

I doubt we'll see too much improvement in 24-105mm designs at this price point, until electroactive polymers replace glass elements and allow for focal length change without having to reposition elements.

Jeremy,

I guess like many for me the prospect of a revamped 24-105 lens was eagerly anticipated. My original came with my 5D Mark II as a kit lens and I recognised mainly through reading and looking that it wasn’t Canon’s finest hour. Subsequent lens purchases and the arrival of the 5Ds relegated the lens to sitting on the bookshelf.

So reading some more, planting the lens on to my 5Ds and having a hard look I realised that my lens wasn’t a bad example optically. Sure it wasn’t sharp like the Sigma Art 50 but it could in its sweet zones (not wide open at 24mm) with judicious post processing  (particularly now with Capture One 10) deliver some perfectly acceptable images both with the 5D II and 5Ds.

I wouldn’t change to the new version as it seems that physics wins again.

Sometimes you have to be happy with what you have; after all, to paraphrase an expression, the best photos are taken with the lens you happen to have on your camera.
