Importing commented files to iPhoto
« on: July 14, 2006, 04:09:37 pm »

I'm trying to help someone move her file catalogue from Photoshop Album 2 to iPhoto (she switched to Mac). All the files are commented but I can't get the comments to show on files imported to iPhoto. They're also catalogued, but that's not a big problem.

As far as I understand iPhoto doesn't support iptc comments, but there are some scripts that are supposed to work. Unfortunately I haven't been able to make them work yet (one needs to run through an app that doesn't run on Intel Macs, and the other I don't know why won't work, and I can't contact the author: http://www.ibart.net/2006/01/metadata_to_iphoto.php  )

Can anyone here help?

iPhoto is unstable. I've had two different installations, on different Macs, lock up on me. In different ways too. But same result: photos unreachable. Glad I had good backups (folder/file style). I know of 2 others who had the same probs with iPhoto. When, trying to find a solution, I discussed it at length in http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa I got banned...  Apparently Apple doesn't want this in the spotlight!
Still, you'll find plenty of iPhoto horror tales there (http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?o...ch=Go&q=lock+up).

It's shoddy software, really. The worst I've seen from Apple in 21 years.

I've used PhotoMechanic (http://www.camerabits.com/; handles RAW+JPG), PhotoLine32 (shareware; handles RAW, http://www.pl32.com/), GraphicConverter (shareware; handles RAW; http://www.lemkesoft.com/) and PS8 since then.

And now for something slightly off-topic (and a LOT better than iPhoto!)

Well, that's no good.. I'll have to look at graphic converter, but photomechanic is not really the kind of program she's looking for, it needs to be newbie friendly, nothing advanced. Album was good for the job. Isn't there  a similar program for Mac?

Just set it up for her proper.

Hmm.. from what I remember of PM it wasn't very newbie friendly which shouldn't be surprising given its target audience, but I'll take a second look. The price tag is rather high though, she just needs something like Album which was only 1/3 the price.
