Sunrise locations in Bay Area
« on: July 09, 2006, 01:48:58 am »

Hi,

I live in San Jose, CA. Anyone has suggestions about good sunrise locations around (say, in an hour's drive) ?

Thank you,
Prabal.

I'd agree with that. The lookout/scenic overlook off 101 just past the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge is another. If you're willing to explore a bit, and get off the beaten track, the area northwest of Lake Berryessa has a lot of good out-of-the-way spots. The road that goes along the west side of the lake past Spanish Flats goes all the way to Clear Lake, and if you have a really good map, you'll find a little dirt road that cuts over to Hwy 16, and goes through a large area of 4WD trails that have some really breathtaking vistas. I'd recommend staying there overnight, and scouting duting the day. Pick a sunset and sunrise spot, shoot the sunset, stay overnight, and shoot the sunrise the following morning. You'll be glad you did. And you can go through the Napa valley on the way there or back for some more good shooting (or tasting) opportunities.

Thanks Guys. I'll definitely explore these places over the cocming weekends.

Also, FYI, last sunday I tried shooting sunrise over the San Francisco Bay from the China Camp State Park in San Rafael. It was a nice experience. I sure would go there again.

Thanks,
Prabal.

Hi,

I have never been to Mt Tam and am planning to go this Saturday morning. Do you have a specific trail or area to suggest for sunrise photography ?

Thanks,
Prabal.

There's a parking lot almost at the top. From there it's a short walk to the top, or iirc (it's been 30 years), there's also a short trail "around" the top if you prefer to get some foreground. Ideally you'll have the typical bay area fog below but with various hills and peaks poking above and when the sun rises it can be quite spectacular. Also there are views back to SF and the Golden Gate although obviously you wouldn't get the sun in these shots except perhaps with a very wide angle. You might consider taking a tripod and trying some panorama stitching.

While you're in the Mt. Tamalpais area, don't forget to stop at Muir Woods, which is between Mt Tam and the ocean, and Muir Beach.

I visited Mt Tam last Saturday for sunrise. It was not very memorable ... mostly because I didn't know the area and arrived only about 15 mins before sunrise. I ended up parking near Mountain Home Inn and the sunrise from there was just okay-ish. I wish I knew the area better or had scouted it beforehand. Haven't gotten my pictures back yet (I exclusively shoot slides).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm sure I'll go back there one of these weekends!
