P800 or P6000?
« on: November 17, 2016, 08:46:10 am »

I need to get a new printer, as my IPF6300 has too many problems and I am sick of throwing good money after bad.  I am hesitating whether to get again a 24" or a rather settle for a 17".  I am what you would describe a serious hobbyist (i.e., I don't make but spend money on photography).  I like to print big which would speak in favor of the 24" inch.  But the price difference between the P800 (with roll film holder) and the P6000 is a whopping 1.800 EUR, for which you can buy a lot of large prints from a third party supplier.

One consideration for the purchase decision is whether the P6000 is more prone to problems, in particular clogging, than the P800 (or the Canon Pro-1000) when used infrequently. Or does it differ from one indivisual printer to another and one simply has to get lucky or at least not unlucky?  There are so many conflicting reports on one and the same model from different users.

Any thoughts on this much appreciated.

Thanks.

Georg

I have both. The P6000 replaced a hopelessly clogged 7890; the P800 replaced an aging 2400. Only you can answer if you really need/want to print on 24" stock. Large prints do take a lot of wall space to exhibit!

I understand that the P800 roll holder is just that, and there is no cutter available; that could be an issue for you.

Both printers are quite new, neither have shown any issues so far. The P800 is a really nice piece of equipment.
I am considering purchasing the extra two-year warranty for the P6000 from Epson at the end of it's first year. I did purchase a 3-year warranty for the P800 from my supplier in Canada (cost was only $300).

You may want to consider the P7000 instead of the P6000 is you decide to go large wide format.  The color gamut is improved.  I have the opportunity to return my 6000 because of issue and decided to get the 7000 and was glad to do so.

Have had the P6000 since April or so. It replaced a 7880 that never had an issue in 8 years of use, but I didn't want the hassle of moving it in the middle of winter on a cross country trip.  If you print much, the cost savings of buying ink in larger quantities is a blessing.  After much discussion and pondering, the P7000 didn't make sense for me.   Good luck, either way you will be happy.  Bye the way, I live in Southern Arizona and clogging has not been an issue, nor was it ever with the 7880 in Nebraska.

Thanks. All helpful comments, but I am still undecided.
