There's a sense of energy that comes out from the sun through the tree - powerful light, perfect for the morning. Initially, I was a bit disturbed by the contrails but to be honest, the rest of the image makes me forget them.

Great job!

Better than a cup of strong coffee to wake you up.

Great shot, Bill. And it illustrates once again what HCB said: "It's always luck." I love backlight and I've attempted a barrel of shots like this one, often with disastrous results. It's really, really hard to control a shot like this but it's always worth trying. You nailed it. On the other hand I think I'd have Photoshopped out the contrails.

Thanks for the positive comments.

Francois & Russ - yes, the contrails are rather intrusive. I might have to work on them.

Not one to second-guess others very much, but: the shot's pretty damned good, and were it mine, I'd make it a lot darker and thus accentuate the positive, as they say. Make it a statement, rather than just a picture; sod reality in this case (it's black/white - you are allowed!). Yeah, remove the trails.

I'd suggest blurring the contrails rather than cloning 'em out. Turn 'em into streaks of cloud.

Fine photo!

Here's a darker version, sans contrails, though the retouching looks a bit of a mess. I'll have to try bit that again

Great shot - both versions, although I prefer the early morning brilliance of the first. Great work, Bill.

Agreed. An image like this need contrast to be believable.

Yes and no. I prefer the overall "feel" of the latter, but I find the sun itself a little too well-defined to be credible in the circumstances.

I think # 2 better; the more defined Sun make it look even more filmic - an advantage!

I vote for #1, I like the surreal, intense light.

Casting another vote for the first one, although both are very nice.

I can see the positives in the second version, but when I first processed it, I wanted to capture the misty feel, and retaining a lightness about it, and some gradually diminishing detail in the trees, were central to that intent. I think I'll play around with something that's maybe an amalgam of the two, but not some wishy-washy compromise; if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Either way, this is one I'm going to print - I think it's worth it.  :)

+0.5  ;D

I prefer the feel of first with a touch of the second. I definitely prefer the sun for the first.
