Web-based training for ColorThink Pro
« on: June 28, 2006, 04:44:22 pm »

Just got ' ColorNews'  newsletter from Chromix:

* For some time now, customers have asked for
ColorThink training. Wait no longer! CHROMiX is
now offering web-based training specifically for
ColorThink Pro!! Steve Upton, designer and
developer of the award-winning ColorThink &
ColorThink Pro software, will personally conduct
the training. The WebEx class will consist of one
two-hour session, and one one-hour session. The
first two hours will cover fundamental and
intermediate use, and touch on some advanced
concepts. The second session, to be held at a
later date to allow for student experimentation
beforehand, will cover advanced concepts and
questions. All you need is a current browser and
ColorThink Pro. The price for the training is
$450. If you don't have ColorThink Pro, the above
training plus ColorThink Pro is $725 (new
version), or $625 (upgrade from ColorThink
standard version). For more information or to
register, call Sales at 866-CHROMiX x1 or email
sales@chromix.com.

I don't want a webinar for $450. The only thing I need is a good manual. Where's the manual ?

From the interim supplement that came with ColorThink Pro:
We apologize for not having the full ColorThink Pro documentation ready for the software’s ship date. We have included Chapter 7 Color Worksheet as it is the newest and most complex tool in the ColorThink toolset.
Please check back with us soon (we will also directly notify purchasers of ColorThink Pro) to obtain the full documentation and take full advantage of the power new tools in ColorThink Pro.

There are still too many bugs in the current beta to be thinking about training just yet.  I am talking about bugs that give completely wrong values in the Color Worksheet.  All of the bugs that fall under this category (about 10 significant ones) have been confirmed (by me) on two different windows machines with different service pack level, different graphics cards, etc.

I agree that a manual would be nice, too.

I think there will be a very strong reaction against any company charging for this sort of training .
It would appear that the established principle of selling a product with a clear manual is being eroded. It's like "Buy a car for $20,000 and for only an extra $30,000 the Chief Engineer will give you a 3 hour driving lesson."
In Australia, many of us are descended from a long line of convicts, bushrangers , pickpockets , squatters, land sharks, sheep stealers etc and consequently have a good nose for a rip-off.
I apologise if I am being far too sensitive, but would not like to see this sort of thing being acceptable as the norm , when buying a bit of software , a new printer or any other product.
Of course it is a free market and there is nothing to stop a try-on.
Companies would do well though to consider their reputations . Customers may move very quickly when the inevitable competitive product emerges.
Cheers,
Brian

Steve Upton has posted information about the manual.  He plans to start a ColorWiki, one part of which will have the manual (which can't be edited by just anyone, but can be easily updated) plus articles that others can edit.  Sounds good to me. Details here:

There's still no news on the status of ColorWiki. I asked about the status on Steve's ColorForums.

As a former RG member I got an e-mail from the new owners introducing their ProPhotoWiki [a href=\"http://www.prophotowiki.com]http://www.prophotowiki.com[/url] with a portal on color http://www.prophotowiki.com/w/index.php/Portal:Colour

Doug Kerr is one of the contributors.

It looks as if there's going to be some competition for the future ColorWiki.

Can you believe this? I just got an email saying that the ColorWiki is open to beta volunteers. They hope to open it to the public in a few weeks.

The long awaited ColorThink manuals are there!
