Orientation (mapping) Between DLSR Image and Sensor?
« on: August 29, 2016, 06:19:55 pm »

I'm old and losing it. Question:
What is orientation (mapping) relationship between DLSR image as viewed on screen and physical sensor?
Guess 1: Top on screen (sky) = Bottom of sensor
Guess 2: Right Side on screen = Right Side of sensor

In other words, top and bottom are flipped, but right and left are not reversed. Or, are right and left also reversed?

fyi 1.. I miss Michael and think of him every day.
fyi 2.. I'm not sure where this question goes, but I'm sure it will get read here.
fyi 3.. I'm cleaning sensor (1Dx mk2). It would help if I knew this. In another life I'm pretty sure I did know it.

Guess 2 is also correct when viewing the front side of the sensor as you would during cleaning mode.
Basically the captured image is rotated 180° on the sensor.

If by right side of the sensor you mean its right side when looking at it from the lens side.

Yes, that's what I mean. Right side as viewed from lens side as you clean the sensor.
For purposes of locating dust for sensor cleaning, as you view the on-screen test image:
1) Top of on-screen image = bottom of sensor as viewed from lens side
2) Right-side of on-screen image = right-side of sensor as viewed from lens side
3) Left-side of on-screen image = left-side of sensor as viewed from lens side

Yes, when you look at the final/screen image everything that was projected on the sensor is rotated again, but when looking in from the front, left and right are reversed because you only flip the camera left to right and right becomes right and left becomes left as seen from the front.

Cheers,
