Hasselblad HC120mm Macro versus HC120mm-II
« on: August 28, 2016, 03:10:47 am »

A friend is selling her Hasselblad HC120 Macro, the first version. I can also buy a new HC120/4-II. I plan to use it on my Leica S2-P with the adapter.

Is the second version of the lens better than  the original version?

I read somewhere that the second version improved the wide open performance of the lens. I will use the lens between f8-f16 for macro. Will I notice the improvements when shooting tabletop and macro ?
What is the opinion of the version two of those who have been using the lens.

Thanks.
Yevgeny

Hi Evgeny... May I suggest to try the Contax Zeiss 120mm f4 micro APO too on the Leica?  Unless if the higher sync of the Hasselblad lens is essential to you, I've find the Zeiss nearly flawless...

At f/8 you will not see noticeable difference.

However, if there is 1 Leica S lens that you should buy is the S 120mm. Razor sharp, worth the price!

Hi Theodoros,
I do have the Contax 120mm macro lens and I am happy with it.

I share my studio with a pro and she is selling her Hasselblad system. I can buy some of her lenses. She has an older version of the HC Macro hence the interest. I will need a multishot back of a camera in December and I expect there will be some older Hasselblad multishot cameras to choose later this year.

H cameras (and Rollei 6008 too) certainly work like a gem with multishot backs, they are as quite as a "dead man"  :D I would say... The thing is that LV on other than the multishot Sinarbacks with LC shutter can be an issue... (as I have find)...

You should find this discussion relevant, the choice depends on your shooting requirements, as noted above it is "better" at f4 - f8 if you don't need to be in this range say f11 onwards, which is what you note in the your first post the difference is in the cost!!

Thank you very much. Very useful information.

I will need to shoot a collection of beadwork and embroidery 18-19 centuries purses before and after restoration. I usually did that kind of stuff with my Sinar P3 and Sinar 54H. They were stolen. I will have to find something solid to be able to get the result.

I have my Leica S2-P and an Cambo mini-view camera with the Zeiss 74mm and an APO -Digitar. (Bought from Theodoros). I will try one shot first, but in my limited experience 4-shots were always better.

Perfect subject for multi-shot.

Hi,

If you stop down beyond f/8 there will not be a lot of difference between good lenses as diffraction will take it's toll. The new lens may have advantages beyond sharpness/resolution, but the old version was a very good one AFAIK.

If you can test her HC120mm and find that is OK why not go with that?

Best regards
Erik

Thank you for for the comments.
I use her lenses occasionally and they are pretty old. The newly issued lenses shall be able to be synced at 1/2000 on new cameras and will be future proof. That's one of the reasons why I got interested and ask the questions.

I would not pay double for having 1/2000. There are plenty of nice, mint lenses on the market that will be able to do 1/1000.

Only the new (orange dot) lenses will be able to do 1/1000.

Someone wrote that the new orange dot lenses will not work on my Leica S2-P. Is that correct?
