Shelf life of inks for ipf5000
« on: June 22, 2006, 08:38:31 am »

One of my concerns with this type of printer is how long the inks will last me, which is a long time.  Even at Michael's rate, the inks will last a long time as he states in his review.  Is there any problem with the inks getting old?  Do you need to remove the cartriges and shake them up once in a while?

I have not discovered any info on shelf with the printer when received. Shaking the carts before installing was an instruction. I am considering a once a month plan of removing the carts to (re)shake. I am considering discussing this with CS to see what steps are best to not mess anything up with the printer that I may not have learned yet.

If the printer cleans out the lines each time a cart is replaced, that could be expensive.  I have no idea if that is the case.

This is not the case.

I should have realized that you don't have to recharge the lines with each cart change just from the review, duh.  But I've never used anything bigger than the 2200.

It is interesting to think that even as a hobbyest this printer might be economical at $2000 since I may never have to buy inks before new technology comes out.  Even if I did, I would never have to buy ink again.  And, if I were to buy ink, I would have to determine whether to put money into this printer or upgrade.  Of course all the cartriges would never be empty at the same time and you would likely have to throw out a considerable amount of ink.

So there is no "Use Before" date on the new carts like with Epson?
It would be nice to know how long can the carts stay in the printer
without the inks starting to clog badly due to old age.

I've had problems with the Epson 2000P with CIS (and Epson 7500
pigment inks) clogging in the inklines after too long period of having
"expired" inks in. Maybe even fresh Epson inks would have clogged
in any case!?

I'd like to go with the ipf5000 as well if the same inkset can be used
for a couple of years (2-3?). I imagine in normal "not quite professional"
use they will last about that much before running out.

I am sorry I have to do this from memory - but I do believe I looked for a use by date on the carts. I do not remember seeing one. I have no packaging from the carts to go find either. I do need to communicate with Canon CS this week (I hope), and I will do my best to remember to ask that questioin about the inks, along with my earlier stated to ask question - can I safely remove them about once a month and shake?

I did talk with Canon CS: 1) at this time they also did not have available if there was a use by date for the carts.
2) they (Richard) said that with the printer off and removing the carts to gently shake and reinstal (so the printer never knew you snuck this little manuver in on it) should be NO problem. That is my plan about once a month.

Hi Gary,

Sounds like a plan! I think the 5000 is the way to go when replacing
my Epson 2000P. It would be nice to have full A2 capability and big
carts to start from. I quite hate the hassle with the 2000P and CIS while
I could just have fun shooting pictures and printing them out with no
(or very few) problems.
