Canon 24-105/4L takes cropping pretty well on the A7rII…
« on: August 16, 2016, 02:36:29 am »

Hi,

This is just a single example on how well the Canon 24-105/4L stands up to cropping on the A7rII. Corners will not excel, but a large part of the image area is quite good.

Very impressive, Erik.

I guess I should have kept my 24-105 Canon lens and gotten an A7rII instead of the RX10 (which also has an excellent but non-interchangeable lens).

Hi Eric,

I am pretty happy with that lens, although it was really bought as a stopgap measure. Just to say, I have three Canon lenses for the Sony A7rII, the 16-35/4, 24/3.5 TSE LII and the said 24-105/4L. All are very good.

Initially, I was not that impressed by the 24/3.5 TSE but now I am quite happy with it. I guess it is a multiple step process:

  • Find out the weaknesses
  • Find a way of living with those weaknesses
  • Discover the strengths
  • Enjoy the results

At my present stage, all those Canon lenses are great.

So, if I love those lenses, why don't I use them on the system they are intended for? The rationale is that I can use them with tilts and shifts, but fact is that I have some other lenses (Contax zooms) for that purpose. I guess that the main factors are:

  • I have been shooting Minolta and Sony for a long time
  • As an engineer, I love mirrorless. It gives me the tools I want.
  • The short flange distance gives a lot of options.

In addition, Sony sensors used to have a great advantage in DR, but DR has never been a real issue for me.

But, if anyone asks me what to use with Canon lenses, I would ask "Why not a Canon?".

Best regards
Erik

I always liked the 24-105. The extra 35mm on the long end make it a much more useful general purpose lens than the 24-70 for me, and I don't mind the f/4 aperture as the IS is quite good.

My feelings exactly. I'm glad to see that someone else shares my view of this lens.

Hi,

Personally I am mostly a tripod shooter, so I don't care that much about f/2.8. But, I had the impression that the 24-105/4L was not that great.

On the other hand, I wanted something like 24-105 and f/4. Looked at the Sigma 24-105/4 but decided to go with the Canon. It has some weakness at the long end, but it is quite OK, it seems.

Just to say, a great photographer I know had a bad sample of the 24-70/2.8 LII and the loaner he got from Canon was also quite bad at the long end. It took some while, but Canon fixed the original lens.

My experience this far is that a good sample of the 24-105/4L can be a good choice for the A7rII.

Best regards
Erik

I'll be really interested to see how the newly-announced 24-105/4L II shapes up. Is there any news on when it might ship?
