Facebook. There are a few groups but they are liberal when it comes to defining street.

I find the problem with Facebook and Flickr groups is that you have to wade through a lot of indifferent material to find the gems. With a practitioner's web site the ratio is usually far higher (if the guy's any good of course).

You make a good point but you get a variety of styles and locations.

Call me irrational or psychotic but I really don't like posting work in places like Facebook/Flikr etc I think once you do you give a tiny bit of it away, a multinational tax dodging corporation gains a little bit more.
One reason not the main reason I shoot film for pleasure these days.

Both are handy places to share but I know what you mean. I do use both as it lets friends see what I'm doing. How about WordPress blogs - are they beyond the pale as well?

Depends why you make photos. If you just want to share them with friends and build a network of people to work with, FB, Tumblr, 500px etc are useful.
If you care about keeping control of your images and maybe making a profit from them, you're right. Unfortunately I don't think many of us are in that situation today, realistically.

I have many personal issues with Facebook and therefore use it sparingly.  Actually I'm on hiatus from FB until after the U.S. elections.

- I'm not keen on photo quality on FB although its improved over the years

- I don't like that they strip all my EXIF data from the photo

- I don't like that once a photo is posted on FB or any other open site on the internet most people thinks it's fair game to steal it.  Most people just repost it without attribution (which is wrong) or save it for themselves but on occasion I've seen my photos used commercially and that really irritates me.

- Posting photos with a watermark is easy but detracts from the photo and irritates many viewers

- I don't like that FB decides what I see

- I don't think the signal to noise ratio is very favorable

I'm an enthusiast not a professional looking to grow my business by establishing an internet presence everywhere so please take my comments with a grain of salt.

- end of FB rant -

Tumblr leaves the exif, and allows you to post anything you want: viewers need to join before they can see, so there appears to be no censorship. Quality is ok so far as I can see. However:
-Your images are still likely to be ripped off. I don't think there is any solution to this;
-You will followed by sleeze-bag gross-out porn-pimp type characters if you post anything vaaaaaguely sexy.

But there are some great images being shared, new and old.

That brings up an interesting question.  What size photos do you share online?  1920x1080?

I set the export dialogue in Lr to limit the larger dimension to 1600... but sometimes I change it to 1205 for Lula and forget to change it back...
However tumblr resizes: I just did an up-down and the new size was about 540 x 810. So not the place to go for quality. Probably as well since anyone can right-click download.

I use 500px if I want better quality, but, hmmm... the site is technically flaky as hell. Uploads are done with a Lr plugin, so the resolution is not entirely obvious, but you can look at things full screen and they look ok (when the site is up). They also disable right-click, but there are of course ways around that: if it's on your screen you can copy it, when it comes down to it.

One further downside I forgot for FB: if you set up a separate "artist" page for your photos, you'll rapidly start receiving demands for money. I just use my regular, real-name FB account and only allow access to my friends: that avoids the blackmail, but has fairly obvious disadvantages in regard to who gets to see your photos vs who sees everything else in your life.

I limit myself to a maximum of 1200 pixels on the largest side. It limits a tiny bit the risk of stealing as the resolution is pretty low.
