24"x34" portfolio box in UK?
« on: August 10, 2016, 06:04:53 am »

Does anyone in UK know of supplier of archival portfolio or Solander box of this size? Silverprint sell very good ones but their closest size is A1 which is slightly small. Very good choices in USA but prohibitive shipping costs.

Thank you Mike. I should have put more detail in my query. I've seen those but need this sort of thing, at 24"x34/36":
http://shop.silverprint.co.uk/Silverprint-Archival-Portfolio-Box-A1/product/45914/AW2645/
I also found one or two UK companies doing bespoke cases, but very expensive.
Nice options from Archival Methods in USA but shipping too costly:

Yes, I wasn't sure if you needed a straight portfolio box or a carry case would work.

Given that Silverprint probably just redistribute, ie don't make their boxes themselves I would give them a call to see if a larger size might be available by special order (rather than custom made)

Thanks. I did call them last year when they weren't able to help but I'll try again.

One or other of these might be able to help although I couldn't find the size you are looking for on a cursory inspection:

http://www.preservationequipment.com/

Your best bet may be to have something custom made, especially if you want a number. I have the details of a company that has made print boxes for a client of mine, I'll post them when I find them.

Regards,

William.

Would it be that hard to make them? In principle it's just a matter of folding and taping some appropriate cardboard... has anyone done this?

Well yes, I do it all the time to package prints for customers. Mostly I make traditional style portfolios with flaps all round but sometimes I make boxes. I like doing it and it is pretty easy to make something servicable but it is time consuming and I find it difficult to make them really slick. The hard thing is the folding. Cardboard thick enough for a 24x34" box is pretty hard to crease; scoring takes forever and then needs reinforcing.

This is the company my client has used, they are in old Trafford, Manchester. I quote: "They will do any size, I don't think they have a minimum order.
From memory the 60cm x 50cm work out about £5 each if you order 50". The boxes they made for him are flat with a separate lid like old darkroom paper boxes. Not sure of the material but it looks like a solid pulp type board with brown kraft paper surface both sides.

I have a client who can laser cut 'boxes' like this from some sort of high density foam and they did say they'd make me one but never did so. If they did do it then it would cost very little for them to make and you could have finger recesses in the walls to make it easy to lift photographs out.

I must badger them about this but I think they are poised to fire me as they have a new software system going in. There's no hard feelings on either side so I can still ask even if they do fire me. I just need to ask the right guys face to face. The laser cutter they use has a fair bit of idle time so anything they could make in that idle time would be a bonus. Amazing bit of kit that can cut 19mm ply or this foam and of course needs very little supervision once programmed.

Thanks for helpful suggestions. I've made further enquiries; responses are:
1)Silverprint: http://shop.silverprint.co.uk/Silverprint-Archival-Portfolio-Box/products/561/
Specially ordered Archival Portfolio Box, internal dimensions 34.5" x 24.5" x 2.5”
Quantity    Price (£) per Box (not including VAT)
1                  282.00
2                  234.00
3                  216.00
5-9               150.00
10-19          135.00
20-49          126.00
50-99          120.00
2) Preservation Equipment Ltd: unable to quote for single box as minimum order requirement (not yet advised), but their A1 Archival Paper Storage Box's internal dimensions of 860x610 mm are close to 24"x34". It's not quite the business but maybe only affordable UK option so far:
http://www.preservationequipment.com/Catalogue/Archival-Storage/Boxes/Archival-A-Size-Boxes
3) Conservation by Design: A1 Timecare Museum Portfolio Box £115 + VAT and they say about double that for a one-off 24"x34" box.
http://www.conservation-by-design.com/productdetails.aspx?id=22&itemno=BXTMPB0914
4) Nuttall Packaging: they just do strong corrugated cardboard transit boxes but suggested I trySawyers Boxes - they have minimum order quantity of 100 and don't seem to do archival photo storage boxes.
5) Archival Methods, the USA company for which there seems no UK equivalent. Their Museum Box (121-2436) 24.5" x 36.5" x 1.5" ($125.55 for 1, $113 for 2-9) would be perfect, and reasonably priced, but cheapest shipping option is $124.95 to which UK import duty is to be added.

Sorry you had no joy from Nuttalls, I spoke to a Michelle Kenny there today and she is going to send me a quote for 50 Solid board box with separate lid, four corner stitched, 36"x24". I also came across this company today who may be worth a call:

Have you tried Nomad? http://www.nomadcases.co.uk/our-products/print-boxes/

They say that they do custom sizes but I have never bought anything but their standard sizes.

I got a reply from my club about boxes

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. We purchased the print boxes from Nomad Ltd in Market Harborough.
Their telephone number is 01858  464878 Their delivery charge is quite high if you are only ordering 1 box as they charge for a pallet I think it was about £12 / pallet.

William, thank you. I spoke again with Nuttalls and they do have a minimum order. They said the 50 boxes they are quoting you for are of 914x610x40 mm size, made of pH neutral board. The 610 mm is just on 24" and I thought 24x34 prints might be a tight fit on that dimension. Conservation Resources said they can't make a case that big.

RHPS & drmike, thanks, Nomad in Market Harborough have a good range. They do:
Print Boxes http://www.nomadcases.co.uk/our-products/print-boxes/,
Print Portfolios http://www.nomadcases.co.uk/our-products/print-boxes/print-portfolio/,
Aluminium print cases  http://www.nomadcases.co.uk/our-products/print-boxes/aluminium-print-cases/,
Nomad poly cases http://www.nomadcases.co.uk/our-products/nomad-poly-cases/
Quotes they have given me so far for 34.75”x24.75”x2” internal dimensions, foam lined, (I can then line with acid free board) are: portfolio case £66.65; Nomad poly case £69.85; aluminium case £152 - all plus VAT. I will probably go for a Nomad poly case.
