Formal Attire

As if to contest the reputation of its tribe as rather ugly beasts, the banded alder borer beetle sports black and white formal wear that impresses virtually all who see him.

Though not uncommon here in the Pacific Northwest, these bugs are only occasionally observed. This one from yesterday is only the second I've seen in the last 9 years; both in our flower garden (which also contains alder and beech trees).

Thanks to each of you. It's good to see some appreciation of one our smaller fellow creatures.

In case some may be interested in seeing him (and it is a him; the extreme length of his antennae is a good giveaway) from a somewhat broader perspective, I'll add the picture below. Not as compelling an image in my opinion, but it affords a better grasp of overall form and design.
