Looks like an interesting option for non-studio portraits, and likely adaptable to a number of mounts. I doubt it will be particularly fast-focusing - lots of glass to move and it requires precision for f/1.4 - but that probably doesn't matter for the intended subjects.

This in going to be another legendary lens, no doubt.

Wondering where they will have put the cursor btwn technical perfection and beauty of rendering. My guess would be a bit more centered than on the 58mm considering the negative comments they got from measurbators. ;)

Now they need a D850 with D5 AF.

Cheers,
Bernard

What are you talking about ? I shoot studio with a 180mm often and don't see any problems. Many shoot studio with 70-200 too and seems to not have problems...

Not sure what you're getting at.

In studio, you're often shooting stopped-down against backdrops and with strobes, so maximum aperture and wide-open performance don't matter, and bokeh barely does. You can use just about any lens and get good results.

Out of studio, you're often dealing with busy backdrops you want to blur into a creamy smoothness, or low light situations (e.g. streetlights or dimly-lit spaces) where a wider aperture helps. The lens matters much more here. 105/1.4 won't help much in studio, but should give you a good boost to subject isolation when out of studio.

Now official:

The way this lens renders seem to be to die for per the first available sample images. It also appears that they have not sacrificed technical excellence in favor of look this time around.

It appears a new 19mm T/S is going to be announced soon also.

Cheers,
Bernard

very true - but sometimes even in studio setting people can try to have some creative bokeh effects behind and then may be those with 70-200 just don't have or don't bother to put other lenses on a camera, as 70-200 can do the job... why bother to switch it to something else at all (enough dust already).

Do you have a link to these sample images?

Looks very nice. I'll stick with my old 105/1.8 for the smooth manual focus and easy aperture control. (And I like its IQ too, of course.)

Yes, so far I think I prefer the look of these compared to anything I've gotten from my Otus 85mm f1.4.

Yes Nikon upped their game big times. I really like this look and it can also be used as a wonderful landscape tool. I'm happy Nikon camper. I'm curious how it render with the D700, especially.

The rendering looks great for portraits - as with the Canon 85/1.2, that is likely to be its main use.

How do the central and edge sharpness, microcontrast, CA and sunstars stack up to do double duty as a landscape lens? Although you're unlikely to carry around such a big and heavy short telephoto prime for landscapes when you can get away with something much smaller and lighter...

Going from those samples this lens does seem a bit more contrasty than the old 105mm F/2 DC.

Not sure if many would buy this lens mostly to stop it down but it does I spose open up new possibilities when it comes to using shallow DOF at larger distances for picking out elements of landscapes. I do sometimes use my 105mm DC for that and more control might be useful...
