Michael,
Will you be doing a full review of the Joba Giga View Pro?

Alternatively, does anyone have experience with this device, especially in comparison with the Epson P-4000?  I am headed to Africa and will need a device like these.

I saw it at PMA and was impressed, but I have no immediate plans for a review.

It's not available yet, but is scheduled for release my the end of this month (after having release pushed back twice this year). Pre-orders are available from Adorama at list price, which Jobo has stated will be the street price.

If it lives up to expectations, it will surpass the Epson in several ways -- better screen, ability to make copies to other disks without a laptop or computer connected, storage up to 120 GB, etc.

HI thanks for the information.  The only disadvantage I see is the size. It is a bit bigger than the epson.  Weight seems similar.  Is there a list of compatible raw images that can be viewed on the  monitor?  Do you know for example if you can use with the Aptus digital backs?  I am going to Alaska in August. I usually bring a computer so I can answer emails for related reasons.  Plus i like to be able to view my images and edit them when I have some free time. I do need a portable HD and debating between getting the jobo or just a portable drive to use with my computer. mark

The Jobo Evolution is much more expensive than a hard drive. You can find a list of supported RAW files that it can display on Jobo's site, but display will be slow by necessity. Other devices don't display the actual RAW file -- on the Jobo you will be able to set it to display the RAW or the embedded jpg in the RAW file (which is what others show).

The Jobo is designed for quick download from CF cards, and good display of the photos including 100% zoom.

I have been looking for a compact mass storage device compatible with and able to display and store my Phase One P45 files while traveling. At the PMA show in Orlando Florida earlier this year I tried some P45 files on two well known portable storage disk devices. These devices stored the files but were not able to display the embedded jpegs or the RAW files.  More recent inquiries were largely ignored.

Another vendor I investigated, Digital Foci, offers their “Picture Porter Elite”. Upon my initial inquiry as to whether their offering would support the P45 files, they offered to have me upload a  P45 file to their server which they then put on a CF Card and loaded this to the Picture Porter Elite. I was advised that the Elite displayed the jpeg, the histogram, and EXIF data and stored the file. They then uploaded the stored file from the Elite to their server and asked me to download it to my PC to insure file integrity. I downloaded the file and found no differences. All this was accomplished overnight!

I was told a unit could be shipped two days prior to initial delivery of this new product in order to meet my travel requirements. Great service and immediate follow through. I placed the order.

The Picture Porter Elite arrived two days before my departure. I must say that the product is an elegant compact unit (3”X5”X1”), well packaged and includes some of the best documentation I have seen. It was easy to learn and I had it operating in minutes. Models include 40GB and 80GB versions and a 100GB version available on special request.

I highly recommend the Picture Porter Elite and, if you are using the Phase One P45, it is a must.

Additional functions include FM broadcast reception, audio and video playback, direct picture printing and others.

Digital Foci Picture Porter Elite can be seen at www.digitalfoci.com.

This is interesting - about the Picture Porter Elite. Did you own an Epson P-2000 or P-4000 before? If so, how do you think the screen image quality and data transfer speeds compare? Using the unit in your travels, were you fully satisfied with its reliability?

Mark - I have not owned either of the Epson units. At PMA they were unable to display the P45 files. So, I am unable to comare the speeds or display characteristics.  The Picture Porter Elite has a 3.6 inch screen with resolution of 320X240 pixels. This is in excess of the 208X156 P45 jpeg resolution. So, for my purposes it wouldn't matter if the Epson is or is not higher res.

As for speed, I made the following measurements using a San Disk Extreme III 4GB card containing 83 files ranging in size from 40MB to 56MB. Total data on the card was 3792MB or about 3.7GB.

CF card to Picture Porter Elite was 12 min 30 sec   (0.3 GB/min)

Picture Porter Elite to PC hard drive was 8 min 30 sec   (0.4 GB/min)  USB Port

I hope these figures will help.

If you're just looking for backup storage and don't need photo display it's hard to beat the Hyperdrive HD80.
I can download a full 2 GB Sandisk Ultra-II Cf card in slightly over 3 minutes (Seagate 80GB 7200RPM 8MB buffer). It saved my bacon when my laptop died on a six week trip to Alaska this summer. I brought home 45 GB of images on the HD80.
Hopefully the Gigaview Pro Evolution will be at least as fast as the HD80 and the firewire connection would be great to have. It took 90 Minutes to download that 45 GB to my desktop via USB 2.0.

I tested the Hyperdrive HD80 and destroyed it in the process of testing it. The unit I got had an electrical or software defect in the charging process. It told me the unit was charged when it wasn't. It never worked to the capacity it was supposed to work to because of the defective charging system, which their tech support provided guidance for, but it didn't fully resolve the issue. Furthermore it has a fundamental design flaw insofar as one can easily bend a pin while inserting a CF card, which is what happened, because the well is not deep or tight enough. After some hard-ball they took it back from me for a full refund. But I know other people have been much more fortunate with it. From my limited experience with it, I just wouldn't trust such a unit out in the field. Once a pin bends it's toast.

The CF socket is definitly a weak point. I always use extreme care when inserting a card and still it makes me nervous at times. I'll be seriously considering the Gigaview Pro Evo if it gets good reviews. The HD 80 could be used as a backup via USB2 connection from the JOBO unit as it supports USB2GO (I think that's what it's called) which means it can communicate with other devices without the need for a computer, which also means any external harddrive can be used directly connected to the JOBO unit  .
