Gloss and semi-gloss is where the Canon (Pixma Pro) printers shine.

That might be an incorrect extrapolation: the pro100 is a dye printer and has no pretensions to print well on matte (no MK ink). The pro-10 is a pigment printer and could be expected to do better... as for the pro-1 & pro-1000.
