Leaf Aptus no longer supported by Phase
« on: June 20, 2016, 04:07:43 pm »

Did everyone miss the announcment news, that Phaseone will no longer support Leaf older backs? What does this mean? I shoot with an older Leaf Aptus75 back and also own a newer Phaseone IQ back, I rely on the Leaf back for 80% of my work.
i keep using the Leaf because of the chip size and shooting with the back on a Cambo wide with its Lenses. Does this also mean software support will also be dropped? or just repair?

It basically means that the product has come to the end of it's life span in terms of spare parts etc. It's been around 10years I believe. Doesn't mean that it's going to stop working just that it probably won't be able to be repaired if it breaks. It's a courtesy announcement, not many manufacturers bother.

In short, some of the subcomponents can't be reasonably sourced anymore so repairs can no longer be guaranteed.

Team Phase One really hates ending support on products, even when they are quite old. Therefore they usually offer a brief trade in deal offering far more than fair market value for the backs that are getting end of life'd. As a point of reference for software support: even the 1998 light phase is supported in Capture One for both raw files and tethering.

Doug,

Is software available to do remapping if a column fails?

I'm not 100% sure about this but I'm quite sure that you can map out that in the Leaf Aptus calibration data in the back. So as long as they accept the backs for recalibration it should work.

As pixjohn already has a IQ back it's not likely that a tradein offer is the right thing. I guess he's in a similar situation like I am in. Using Schneider Digitar wides with shifting, and really liking those lenses and minimal post-processing required. Upgrading back generally means downgrading performance due to heavy color casts and crosstalk issues.

I did upgrade from a Leaf Aptus 75, but Team Phase One's only actual upgrade for this use case is the P45+, all the later offers requires you to upgrade the lenses too, or well downgrade it if you like me prefer the design principles of the Digitar lenses over the Rodenstock Digarons. I ended up moving to Hasselblad which had the Kodak 50MP CCD which is the last that works well with the Digitar wides. As far as I know those cameras are still fully supported by Hasselblad, but their time is counted.
