Photoshop CS2 crashes on save
« on: June 01, 2006, 06:52:49 pm »

Photoshop CS 2 crashes each time I try to save a file.  I am running it on a Mac G5 under OS 10.4.  I tried re-installing both CS 2 and OS X but to no avail.  Clearly, this is a major pain.  If anyone has insights, or better knows the inside workings of OS X and Photoshop, your help is greatly appreciated.  My feeling is that there is a preferences or settings file somewhere that is corruped and needs to be deleted .  The question is which one.

Thank you.

Did you try resetting preferences? Cmd+Option+Shift while launching.

Just tried.  It still quits on save.  I also updated to the latest version of CS2.  It didn't help either.

Google "photoshop save crash" turned up quite a bit, including this link. and this.

The reports seem to involve saving to a network drive. Are you having a problem locally also?

I did everything explained on both links to no avail.  I am saving to a local drive, not a networked drive.

Do you have a second local hard drive to try saving to? Perhaps a Firewire or USB drive?

Alain,

I don't know anything about Macs, but a couple things:

1.  Is it the same file every time or does it crash on saving any file?

2.  Since it is Unix based, there may be some info about the cause of the crash in /var/log/system.log.  Unix is pretty good about posting everything that happens there.  You may need to use a terminal window to get there.

Any file.  I can't even save preferences from the Color prefs menu in fact.

I can look but I won't be able to make any sense of it.  I can email it to you though if you like.

Yes, and I tried saving to it, but CS2 still crashes before saving.

Alain,

On the very slight chance that your problem is caused by the same gremlin as I experienced some time ago, try saving the file to a different format - say TIFF instead of psd. I have no idea why this solved the problem I had - but it did . . . I _think_ it was caused by an error within the original psd file itself  - bonne chance

Chris

I was thinking along the same lines but had a rare moment of restraint.

[update]
On first glance the referenced post struck me as somewhat funny, hence my reply.  On another level it is not so funny and I have apologized offline to Alain for my reply.  I certainly understand that Alain is more than willing to pay for help, but did not interpret the original posting in that manner at first reading.  It was one of those unfortunate in the heat of the moment posts that I would like to retract.

Lonna and David,

I have no problem paying you for your services helping me fix this problem.  However, can you provide a solution?  When it comes to helping people for pay regarding photography, I deliver and also offer a 100% money back guarantee on my consulting.

You also need to understand that I get on average 25 emails a day asking me to solve printer, color management or other print quality problems, and if I was to provide this help for free it would put me out of business.  Basically, that is all I would be doing!  Not to talk about the fact that most print quality problems are virtually impossible to fix over email.

I do like the joke, but I think this had to be mentioned.

Regards,

Alain

I have the same experience with CS2 on a G4 Mac running OS 10.2.8, but not on a G5 running OS 10.4.  I at first thought it was only an issue when Bridge was open, but closing that didn't help.  My local Mac guru is guessing that it's more likely a memory issue , as I'm only running 1.2gb RAM, and especially running 10.2.8 rather than 10.4.  The G5 has 2gb RAM.  I haven't updated the OS on the G4 because it has an aftermarket scsi board, a real no-no for OS4.

Haven't resolved the issue yet, so the preceding is only food for thought, and more likely speculation.  In any case, you aren't alone in the problem.

I finally fixed the problem.  Gardening, a night of rest, and help from people on the forum did the trick.  Here is the solution.  It worked for me, it should work for you if you have a similar problem:

1-Do a search in the Mac finder for "Adobe".  This will return thousands of file names.  Only look at those which were modified "today", or the last time you tried to open Photoshop

2- Out of all the search results I found these that looked like good candidates and were last modified "today":

Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp
com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist
com.adobe.Photoshop.plist

3- I dragged them from the search result window to the trash and emptied the trash.  Just in case here is the exact path for these files:

User name>Library>Preferences>

In this folder delete:
Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp
com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist
com.adobe.Photoshop.plist

That's all folks.  It fixed the problem for me.  Now Photoshop can save my files.

Highly recommended!

Alain

Good for you, self help actually worked.

What I know about CS2 and MACs you can write on the inside of a matchbook with a greasepensil.

I would have suggested contacting Adobe techsupport either by phone or email. Of course Michael might also have had an answer for you.

Alain,

Glad you resolved your issue. I have also experienced it with my G5, went through all the reinstalls of OSX, CS2, and consequently maxed out the ram. Photoshop has a problem saving files over a certain size and I believe that was my problem.

I can understand your reluctance answering email and giving free advice, however you wrote an article on Outback with a link to your email at the bottom of the article encouraging questions. (??) I guess I thought you were trying to be helpful or interested in others results.

I do disagree with the content of the article and believe that the Epson 9800 and 7800 should be linearized to achieve the best results. This is what Bill Atkinson recommends with the use of his profiles, which was quite close out of the box. But, I'm looking for a match that is more than a guide print for delivery to clients with files. That means my own testing and profiling.

[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=67203\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

I regularly answer short questions regarding the contents of my essays as well as respond to all coments and feedback.  I cannot however troubleshoot someone's system over email.  I honestly can't remember the contents of your email.  If you asked me to troubleshoot your system, I most likely suggested doing consulting or attending a workshop.  As I mentioned, on average I get about 25 such emails each day.  Besides the fact that responding to each of them in detail would put me out of business, it is also virtually impossible to troubleshoot printing and color matching problems over email. This is best done over the phone or, ideally, in person, looking at your prints and comparing them to your monitor image in the context of your color management setup knowing the exact hardware & software used.

Most people believe erroneously that this process is far simpler than it really is and that a simple tip over email will allow them to reach the print quality that has eluded them so far.  I hope it was that simple, but the truth is that this is a complex subject.  Rather than try to provide you with a superficial and quick answer over email, I offer workshops and consulting opportunities in which I provide personalized teaching and solutions.  Yes, there is a cost, but the benefit to you is that you get a solid and accurate solution to your problem, one that will allow you to do world class printing.  I also offer a 100% money back guarantee should the solution I recommend not work for you.

Best regards,

Alain
