Best Arca type tripod plate for XF?
« on: June 03, 2016, 10:49:23 am »

Anyone recommend an Arca-fit tripod plate for the XF?

Lots work, just wondered if someone has found a good answer

The L bracket from RRS is what I use, the one sold for the DF+.  You may need to tweak the two small pins on the bottom as they did not fit in my XF, but did on the DF+.

If you're not using an L Bracket, keep in mind the Arca Swiss Mamiya Plate, that includes the posts that align with the recessed holes on the bottom of the camera, also does fit the XF.

Yes - thanks for mentioning this, Christopher. I don't know if Narikin wants an L Bracket, but though pricey, the SmartFlex is a great choice. Yet, another excellent product with "Cambo under the hood". Note, it does have the posts for secure footing of the camera, and to be clear, it does fit both DF/DF+ as well as XF bodies (and thanks, Doug).

+1 for the Smart L bracket. Two things I really like about it are 1.) Once camera is locked into bracket, it is functional in landscape or portrait mode (i.e. you do not need to remove the camera from the tripod, turn to vertical position and re-mount on tripod)... especially handy when your fingers are cold, and 2.) The Smart Flex plate that attaches to the camera is long enough to allow you to adjust the position of the camera to better balance long or heavy lenses. It is a well designed and made product.

And - the plate itself is detachable and can be used on other AS compatible heads, so if you don't want to use the L Bracket, you can still use the plate, which has the posts.

Thanks all. That L bracket looks stupendous, (does it have any stitching potential?) but is overkill for me, as I work on the move mostly, and have to schlepp all my gear around over my shoulder.  I watch my weight!

A simple plate would do, so I'll take a look for an Arca-Mamiya one or simply an RRS/ generic brand. No reason for overkill.

The Cambo solution, does offer the ability to move the camera fore and aft for a nodal point, one aspect of it I really like.  I did not realize you can move the camera from horizontal to vertical without the need to release the camera from the tripod head as you do with a traditional L bracket, like the the one from RRS.  If this is true then this is more secure for sure.

Here's a video that demonstrates the SmartFlex rotation from landscape to portrait: SmartFlex L video

Gonna ask a stupid question here:

What kind of tripod does that SmartFlex L bracket fit onto?

(I get how the Arca plate mounts the camera to the L bracket: what is never explained is what's on the *bottom* of the L bracket/what kind of tripod it fits onto.)

I have only ever used Manfrotto/Bogen tripods and have several of them. However, I'm exploring looking into new tripod options for the XF.

Every tripod has a normal screw where you screw the Tipps head into. The head has a screw OR a adapter plate. (Arca, novoflex and others)

The Smartflex will fit into any tripod head with an Arca style mount. So RRS Heads, Arca heads will take the Smartflex.

Just buy the real thing, it's about time we stopped buying junky imitations from you know where and support good quality craftsmen!!
(The good stuff will last a lifetime and some and can be passed on in the family when you've moved on).

I'm not sure exactly what the last poster means, but in any event:

I got the Arca D4 head and the SmartFlex L bracket, both of which work like a dream with the XF camera.

(Kept my Manfrotto 055 legs, though: At a glance, I couldn't find anything comparable from gitzo in terms of weight, height, and functionality) (and for personal reasons, I'm not interested in RRS).

Question for those of you who have the SmartFlex bracket and the XF camera: do you leave it on the camera at all times? I've only had it for a day or so and have mixed feelings about leaving it on: it's certainly more convenient to leave it on, but I'm not liking the feel of vertical handheld shooting with it on. (Not because of the additional weight, which is marginal and negligible, but because it's uncomfortable on my left palm when shooting vertically).

In regards to the Smartflex, I leave mine on the XF.  I reverse it with the 35mm, and 55mm to get more nodal slide.  Only issue I have with the Smartflex, is that it seems to have been designed around 1 lens, the 80mm, a lens I just don't use much.
