Thank you all for such nice thoughts.  It's been a hard 24 hours.  Chris and I are feeling the loss of our friend.  We will work harder than ever as we promised Michael to continue his legacy with Luminous-Landscape and the Endowment.

Oh no. I just posted a picture the other day of some wigs, related to my late wife's problems with another form of the illness. I wish I hadn't had the prescience. It's like a curse, that particular illness.

RIP Michael, and thank you so very much for creating this site which has been of tremendous help to me, too, as a means of refinding my own feet.

My sympathies and condolences to your family; may they find the peace that only the passage of time can really bring to anyone.

I'm so, so sorry.

I never met Michael but it was in my plan to meet him one day on a workshop. I didn't knew he was ill so I'm shocked. He IS a landmark for many of us with all his work and dedication to our passion. Thank you very much Kevin & Chris to continue his legacy... can't imagine how sad you are actually and all my condolences to his family.

Rest in peace Michael !

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for keeping Michael's legacy alive! My experience with Lula goes back to the time when Michael was shooting Pentax 67. He was a great educator, I will miss him a lot.

Best regards
Erik

Thank You Michael. You never knew me and yet your generosity of spirit showered me with gifts of knowledge, insight and inspiration over many years. My thoughts are with family and friends. I hope they can take some comfort from the very highest regard that so many people have for their dear departed.

I too have been following Michael and this site for a number of years, once I discovered it. The "Understanding" series in particular, is a boon and especially helpful to photographers at all levels who were just getting into the digital realm. This site IMHO is the cream of the photographic internet community. It reflects Michael's working style, energy and personality. I am saddened by his loss and will miss his unmistakable voice on this forum. My condolences to his family and friends. RIP.

Hearing about Michael's untimely departure has left us all deeply saddened.

He will live on in our minds and hearts, and not least through this valuable website which he founded, and of course through the extraordinary photographs he created.

Thought are with his family and close friends.

Thank you for that touching obituary Kevin. I know you're sure going to miss your friend, it's the hard price to pay for enjoying his company over the many years you spent together.

Very sorry to hear the news. I only knew Michael through his images and articles and did not know he was so ill. But what an original mind and wonderful life emerge so clearly from them.

I felt that there was something wrong when we did not hear from him for such a long time.
He was always generous with his advice and his passion was a beacon for all of us.
Dear Michael
rest in peace and may we meet again

I remember back in 2005 in Antarctica finding him up on deck very late one night (still light though) - only a very few people around.

I asked him, “don’t you ever sleep?”

He answered, “I’ll sleep when I die.”

Thanks Stephen, I hope he is catching up on sleep now.  He was relentless. I remember that trip well.

Dear Michael, RIP, and to family and friends of his my condolences.

As the saying goes what people do for them selves dies with themselves, what they do for others lives forever. I never met Michael like others here may have but I know we all know he will live on forever by his vision and deeds, Regards Brandon (New Zealand)

I've been stopping by here over the past month or two with some apprehension, increasingly aware of Michael's absence.  :-[  Never got to meet him in person but we had some good e-mail & PM chats over the years.

RIP, sir.
