I use two old digicams, Canon G3 and Sony H7, for the occasional time-lapse, purely for fun. Not sure how much life they have in them so I am scouting around for digicams that can be powered by external sources (DC, AC), and this does not seem to be easy to do. Dpreview does not list external power as a separate criteria in their feature search. Any ideas on a quick way to find such cameras, or do I just have to do a model by model manual feature search?

Most DSLRs can be powered externally without a problem.  Simply Google External Power Source for DSLR.  The camera's battery compartment doors even have a small channel to bring the cable through.  Some mirror less cameras can be externally powered through their USB port.  Cameras like the Sony a7R Mk II or a6300 can do this.  Note that the a7 Mk I cameras can not.

But, as I said, most modern cameras can do this easily.  the exact solution for whatever model you are interested in is a Google search away :)

Thanks, I didn't know about the cottage industry making "dummy batteries" for Nikon/Canon/Sony. Didn't find any for Olympus but ittTurns out the aux battery grips for the Oly E-M1 and E-Ms can be powered externally. Olympus sells a power supply for the purpose. It requires low power so the inverters on porta-packs can do the job when AC is not available.
