El Capitan 1981
« on: April 28, 2016, 04:41:37 PM »

A view of the southwest face of El Capitan taken from Yosemite Valley in early September 1981. This slide is part of series of photographs I took during a two-week cross-country trip from Maryland to my post-doctoral position in La Jolla, CA. I had never been west of the Mississippi River, and camped, hiked, fished, and photographed in as many National Parks as I could during the trip: Rocky Mtn, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Crater Lake, Mt. Lassen, Yosemite, and Kings Canyon.

The original Ektachrome slide was converted to a digital file and processed with Lightroom and Photoshop (largely to enhance contrast and remove numerous blemishes on the slide). C&C welcomed, and thanks for viewing.

You did a nice job with that Ektachrome.
The Kodachromes I've scanned from that era have wacky colors. I'll have to try converting some to B&W and see if they work better.

That must have been a memorable trip.

Good texture in the rock face, plus some clouds to provide interest in the sky.

Thanks Eric. I too have found that color management when copying Kodachrome slides is tough. (I use a much cooler WB than 5600K when copying Kodachrome, but with Ektachrome 5600K seems to be nearly perfect.) The only other tip I can suggest is to meter the entire slide just as you would for a real-world scene you're photographing. My early attempts to copy slides were disappointing because I averaged the exposure.

Re: that trip --- Indeed. In a yellow, 1973 VW beetle loaded to the gills with everything I owned. Broke down twice. First night camping near Estes Park in Rocky Mtn NP I had a torrential rain that soaked my down sleeping bag, which remained damp for most of the trip. These are what memories are made of.
