Today I added to SpectrumViz several new paper white spectral plots of the Epson Legacy papers and of Canson more recent production batches. Older Canson production spectral plots are there too till I shift them to the Obsolete Media map. I have to thank John Dean for the two Epson Legacy paper samples I received from the USA. Could still use samples of the two other qualities and samples of recent Canson production batches. Not totally sure that Canson papers bought after the summer of 2015 represent the latest production batches.

There are some screen shots of the plots added to this message. Comparing the Platines (not all having that label) I see more similarity in the Arca and Epson versions than in the Epson and Canson versions. I expected the Arca<>Epson similarity but did not want to speculate too much on that before I had the Epson sample. The Arca version is made by Felix Schoeller, I have firsthand information for that fact. The differences for all samples are more likely in further developments of the coating qualities by Felix Schoeller and possible differences in the paper bases delivered to Felix Schoeller.

Epson Legacy Fibre and Canson Rag Photographique are close if not identical. Do not pay much attention to 5 or 10 grams differences in the gsm numbers. I have experienced that distributors that rebrand paper qualities do not either or shift them a bit on purpose.

EDIT: BTW, I would be interested in some samples of this paper too: http://www.freestylephoto.biz/385441-Arista-II-Legacy-Series-Baryta-Photo-310gsm-Inkjet-Paper-44-in.-x-50

What would be nice in addition to the paper white spectrale plot , to gave also plots of maximum black yellow magenta cyan green. That would indicatie the capabilities of the coating.

An old idea that is harder to realise in practice than I thought. I had two secondhand Epson 6 channel desktop printers loaded with 3PK and 3MK black inks to drive with QTR. The fastest way to get at least the black Dmax for the  best known inkjet inks. Consistency in printing is difficult and the brands introduce new inks faster than I can get this test running.  It will not happen here I am afraid.

Thanks Ernst,

As always, really useful info. Interesting to see the white point moving up over time from original Canson Platine to today's Platine, to Epson Platine, on upwards.  It was quite 'creamy' before, but love to know how Schoeller are nudging it upwards each year, without OBAs. Quite ongoing development, happy to see that.

I've never heard of Arca Proline Vibrant Superior Fine Art - is this just EU based? We have the Legacy range here, so maybe its a marketing deal carving out the territories?

Am happy to post you some more Epson Legacy samples from USA, or on one of my regular trips to Europe. PM me if so,

thanks again.

Yes, the white reflectance is improving in that "Platine" quality, from Lab L 97.0 to Lab L 98.8 (Arca), all 100% cotton base papers. So where users have seen a small drop in Dmax in the Canson versions for some inks, the overall dynamic range still improves.

Arca.nl is a nice Dutch EU distributor of Innova and Hahnemühle papers + a range of papers with the Arca Proline label, mainly RC papers though but with this hidden jewel among them.

I like to measure the other Legacy qualities and any (rebranded) Felix Schoeller paper. One wonders whether the deal for Epson Legacy stated that the EU remains Canson or Felix Schoeller territory. The more reason to find the FS rebranded qualities.
