SONY/ZEISS 16-24 a good lens?
« on: April 14, 2016, 06:48:56 pm »

I was wondering if anyone here had tried the SONY/ZEISS 16-24 OSS F4 zoom.  If so, is it a good sharp lens?

If you are asking about the 16-35 f4, yes the lens is excellent...especially good from 16mm to roughly 28mm.

For a zoom lens in that range it is very good but it gets beaten for resolution by primes like the Loxia 21mm and Batis 25mm (no surprise there) as you get to the outer parts of the frame.  But as a zoom, it is in the same general league as the highly rated 16-35 f/4L Canon lens

How does the Nikon 16-35mm VR zoom compare to the SONY and Canon zooms?

If you're not in a hurry, it might be worth waiting to see what Sony comes up with next.

They've just released the super-sharp GM-series 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 zooms. Logically, the next one would be a UWA zoom - 16-35 or 11/14-24.

It's a notch below the Canon and Sony Zeiss for corner resolution

I'm heavy user of Nikkor 14-24/2.8, and also previously Sony 10-18/4.0, now using Zeiss 16-35/4.0 with my A7R.
Compared to other wide angles I was badly surprised by visible vignetting of Zeiss 16-35/4.0 at 16mm at f4.0  :o

Resolution is good, but this vignetting is killer for serious work, unless you stop down the lens.

It's a good all around zoom that I picked up while waiting for the trickle of wide primes to arrive. Better on the short end than the long end. I have been shooting mostly at f/8-f/11 with it and am happy, although if the Batis 18 were available at the time I likely would have gone for that. There has been talk of copy quality variance, another thing to consider.

I should add that the a/f performance is not as snappy as say the 55/1.8, but the focusing ring is nicely dampened for manual focusing.
