Question on Canon Pro-1
« on: April 11, 2016, 09:26:02 am »

Hello Luminous community :)

I have several questions, we plan to purchase Pro-1 for printing color temporary tattoo designs on adhesive sheet paper, which are applied by wetting the paper on the skin.

- Do you know if the inks used in this printer are FDA approved, as they will be applied to skin?
- Would this printer be able to print properly on adhesive sheet paper?
- Would you recommend this printer for this purpose?

Thank you all!

I would be very surprised if Canon had sought FDA approval! Presumably it would have to be under the rubric of "cosmetics", where interestingly colouring agents are a special case. On the FDA site you'll find this:

FDA does not have the legal authority to approve cosmetic products and ingredients (other than color additives) before they go on the market. We also do not have a list of tests required for any particular cosmetic product or ingredient. However, a manufacturer or distributor of a cosmetic is legally responsible for ensuring that a marketed product is safe when consumers use it according to the directions in the labeling or in the customary or expected way. FDA can take action against the manufacturer of a cosmetic on the market if we have reliable information to show that a cosmetic does not meet the legal requirement for safety.

The law treats color additives differently. Unlike other cosmetic ingredients, color additives, other than coloring materials used in coal-tar hair dyes, must be approved by FDA for the specific intended use before they are permitted in any cosmetic.

Thank you very much Graham,

Canon UK replied this way: "With reference to your enquiry we would like to inform you that our inks are not toxic, therefore unpleasant skin reactions can be expected only in cases, when the individual has a specific allergy to ink."

Also, do you think there would be any issues printing on adhesive paper with this printer? Canon website does not show as Pro-1 supports printing on adhesive paper.

Thank you!

thats most likely because Canon doesn't sell adhesive paper.  They tend to 'ignore' anything they dont sell.  Set the thickness and give it a go.  You may find the inks 'bleed' a bit if the sheets aren't really inkjet friendly.

Thank you very much howardm

Would you, or anyone else, recommend any other printer for printing on:

- max A4 size,
- fast,
- 50+ printout per day,
- high resolution printout
- not performing so bad on adhesive paper :)
