Presets on LCDs
« on: May 18, 2006, 12:14:39 am »

Conventional wisdom is adjusting RGB sliders on a DVI connected LCD monitor affects the LUTs of the videocard.

What do the presets affect? Same thing?

Presets on LCDs

Adjustments to the video card LUTs effects the signal before it's sent to the display. Adjustments to the LCD display controls effects the image after it's been sent to the display but before it's put on the LCD screen. The effects of each are the same; altering a 8-bit/channel image.

Selecting presets does the same as adjusting the RGB and contrast controls on the LCD display. The color characteristics of a LCD are baked into it during manufacturing. The only thing that can be adjusted on them that will not degrade the image is the brightness control as that is the only analog adjustment available.

Presets on LCDs

Thank you. Now that makes sense.

So I guess in this case it applies to VGA connected LCDs as well...

<edit> Which leads to the following question:

Does adjusting those sliders and presets on a monitor with 10 or more bit internal LUTs (whwn you don't have a DDC connection) still lead to the RGB values loss?
