Canon 5d Colour Space
« on: May 14, 2006, 11:13:31 am »

Sorry about this guys but I can't find the answer to this one anywhere.

I know the colour space can be set in camera on the 5D, but does that actually effect the tones in the raw file, or does it just flag the file to be converted to Adobe RGB when the file is opened in a raw conversion program?

If it doesn't actually change the recorded tones is there any advantage to setting it camera?

You set the colour space in whatever RAW converter you are using. There is no advantage to setting it in camera.

Best wishes

Actually there is an advantage to setting in-camera color space.

Sid is right in that the color space set in camera has no effect on the raw file itself, but it does have an effect on the histogram on the back of the camera. Setting to AdobeRGB will give you a more accurate idea of your exposure since it will not clip as soon as sRGB.

On that note, it is advisable to set the WB presets to match the shooting conditions for the same reasons.

Thanks Sid

I thought that must be the case but I wasn't quite sure.

That means I can get rid of the annoying  "_mg"  re-labling the 5D does on the Adobe RGB files

Hmm... That came in while I was typing 61Dynamic

I'll have to look at that in more detail. It's certainly something I hadn't thought of but I'm not sure how close the histogram is to the raw file, I thought it more closely mirrored the JEPGs

It does, but an Adobe RGB jpeg is closer to raw than an sRGB jpeg!

The histogram is made from a jpeg of the image and that is why setting the camera to AdobeRGB is a good idea. Doing so will give you a more telling histogram than one from a very confined sRGB jpeg.

So I'll just have to put up with the re-labling issue then.
