Leica SL 90-280mm available March 24
« on: March 17, 2016, 06:42:51 am »

Leica seem to have kept their promise. The new SL 90-280 is available March 24 !

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The US price of the new Leica APO Vario Elmarit SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 lens that was announce earlier today is $6,395. Pre-orders are now open.

More on the Leica APO Vario Elmarit SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 lens construction:

"Of the 23 elements in seven moving groups, seven are made from glasses with anomalous partial dispersion for the minimisation of chromatic aberrations. The movement of the two focusing elements is provided by a newly developed drive concept with linear positioning of the lenses by stepping motors. A special feature of this is that the overall length of the lens does not change when either focusing or zooming. The lens hood supplied with the lens suppresses undesirable reflections and stray light. The lens also has a removable tripod plate for attaching it to a tripod. Its ergonomic design makes the lens easier to carry by hand and allows the attachment of a lens belt. A lockable rotating tripod collar allows the lens to be fixed at any angle. The collar has detents every 90 degrees for rapid switching from landscape to portrait format."

And for those who still like the concept of compact Leica optics, I can report that the 135mm f/3.4 makes a great telephoto for the Sony a7rii.

1.85KG, not exactly what one would call a lightweight...

Thus my comment about the 405 g Apo-Telyt-M 135mm ...

But, of course, these products are aimed at different markets.  I'm a hiker.

It's right section with wrong title.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with "mirrorless". Some people, including Michael, argued that it describes what something isn't rather than what something is... But so what, if it does define the category properly?

Haven't heard about people complaining about "wireless" recently, BTW...

I was just joking but this section is called "compact camera systems". ;)

I was just joking but this section is called "compact camera systems". ;)

I know, I know... It's just a pet peeve of mine -- all these attempts to "correct" established names.

Favorite example is, probably... the constellation of Ophiuchus (!). In Russian, Ophiuchus sounds like "Snake-carrier". And imagine this: I was reading a good book by a Russian astronomer, where at some point, while talking about a nebula (IIRC) in constellation "Snake-carrier" (lets call it this way for the purpose of this post), the author noted that constellation's name was "wrong" -- because one might imagine that someone would hold a snake, but there was no point in carrying a snake. So, he said, the constellation should have been named "Snake-holder"! And he kept calling it like that throughout the rest of the book. I was dumbfounded...

So, you see, I just used your remark as an excuse for a bit of rant; sorry about that ;)
