Gudy 831 mounting adhesive and alternatives?
« on: March 11, 2016, 08:37:53 am »

In past, I've mounted my prints on gatorboard that comes with a peel-off adhesive. Works well; no complaints. Recently, I've decided to try adding my own pressure-sensitive backing to other brands of mounting boards. (I've been less than thrilled with spray adhesives. They just haven't worked well for me.) In searching around the web, it appears that many like Gudy 831 adhesive rolls, and some claim that lesser brands are not worth using. Knowing nothing about these pressure-sensitive adhesives (and valuing the opinions of you who visit and post on LuLa), I would like to know your choice in pressure-sensitive adhesive rolls for mounting prints.

I appreciate your time and efforts in responding. Thank you.

GBC Arctic Premium is acid free as well.
I'm using Neschen so not really sure about the GBC product.
But I would assume they are pretty similar to each other.

Seal's Print Mount Ultra.
Use it on Gatorboard for our canvas mounting.
It cost way more then the Miracle Muck we used to use.
We can do a mount in 75% less time with the laminator and labor is way more expensive then material.

I've had trouble with 831 and canvas, with the canvas sagging over time.

Dan- Are you cold or hot laminating the Seal Print Mount Ultra with canvas?

What do you mean by sagging? I hear sagging I think of gallery stretching.
If you stick it on with a laminator it should stick pretty good.
canvas does not stick like papers do. Any kind of papers and Print Mount you cannot pull off. Canvas can be repositioned.
Print Mount is a cold product, no heat required. For smaller work I cut a sheet off the roll, brayer it down flip it over and trim. I then run it through the laminator.

I am using a cold roll laminator. The canvas sticks to the Gudy nice right away. But after time, it will sometimes fall away (sagging) from the substrate, looking not unlike a trampoline, especially if there is any bow in the substrate.
No issues mounting paper of any kind.

Not putting it on foam board are you?
Call around and find someone to sell you some samples.
Stuff is pretty expensive and you should try it out before buying too much of it.

Never heard of foamier, who makes that? I've used Gilman foamcore and also a green (adj) recycled corrugate type of substrate. I think gator would be a better choice, but I don't like the thickness as it's harder to frame (rabbet depth).

Foam board, gotta blame that on my failure to proof..
The foam board is way too flimsy. Stopped using it all together. But then I do not mount anything small.
Nothing hard about framing gator board.
The 1/4" is closer to 3/16" the next size up 3/8" fits in all my rabbets.
The 1/2" is a different story regarding fitting in rabbit depth.
I use the 1/4" for all my 24x36 inch canvas prints and it works great.

Or relying on the distributor...

I know you use gator pretty much exclusively? So what you're saying you've never had a future failure mounting canvas on gator with Print Mount Ultra? What thickness gator?

Never a failure. It still does not stick like it does on photo papers but I have never had a problem.
I use the 1/4"
I was referring to my spelling error. (Proof)
