Printao8 and Epson SC-P600 issues
« on: March 03, 2016, 03:49:51 pm »

I just attempted the install of Printao8 Home edition to use with two Epson printers - the SC-P600 and the R3000.  Adding the R3000 printer went fine, but the 600 did not.  Two instances appeared to add, i assumed one was for Airprint and one for USB.  I will spare the gyrations i went through but at the end of the day all of the Signature Worthy profiles were missing.  The Legacy profiles didn't exist, but i assumed those papers may be too new.  Since i prefer Exhibition Fiber at this point for Black and White, missing that profile was a problem.  I called Tech support.  Their tech support is in Germany, which was not an issue.  I stumped the fellow intitiallly, but he did more research and called me back.  He was surprised that those profiles were not available and had to be loaded as customer.  My only option was to load a P800 profile, which was successful, but only provide a draft quality option.  The tech guy tried to assure me that it would be ok, but it was not convincing.  I don't feel like wasting expensive paper to do this.  Bottom line for me is that it completely defeated the purpose of this easy printing software i am am sorely disappointed.  I give the tech support process 4 stars, and the product 0 stars.  I will attempt to get a refund.

Since this software is likely much more valuable to larger format professional shops, those packages may not have this problem.  If you are like me an a hobbyist that likes to try new things out, don't waste you money on this.

If your only problem is the missing profiles for Epson papers in the P600, there is a simple solution. You can unpack the profiles that Epson supplies in the P600 driver and load them into Printao 8 manually. This would be a one-time operation and you'll be good to go thereafter. If your driver set-up is similar to mine, go to Library>printers>EPSON>InkjetPrinter2>EP14080L2.profiles>right click>Show Package Contents>Contents>Resources and all the currently available profiles (as of that driver date) will be there. Copy-paste them to your Library>ColorSync>Profiles folder and then import which you want to Printao8. This or some minor variant of it *should* work.

Hmmm.  Very helpful.  I haven't quite understood where those profiles lurk.  I will attempt this.

I don't blame you - they are very well buried indeed!

Easy to find any or all ICC profiles though the ColorSync utility. It will show you the path. The profiles are installed in a package, you'll have to option click on it, "Show Package Contents" then there they are to copy into the location Mark suggested.

 Main Library>Printer>Epson>S600.plugin>Content>Resource>ICC Profiles.

I found icm files within a package EP1408AM2.  Printao 8 doesn't recognize the file.  It seems to only be looking for icc profiles.

I presume P800 users and other large format users have not had this problem?

There should be legitimate ICC profiles in the package.

i have searched every possible place i can think of and only turn up icm profiles.  Colorsync utility shows same.  At this point i will return to lightroom for printing and hope i can get a refund from Silverfast.  I did not find an s600.pllugin.  Actually, none of the paths match nor the package file names.  Thanks for the ideas.  I will keep plugging away to see if i can figure it out.

From the FAQs at the International Color Consortium website:

"Q. Are there any differences between profiles with ".icc" and ".icm" extensions?

"A. The answer is no. '.ICC' and '.ICM' files should be identical except for the suffix. The .ICC suffix was originated by Apple and Windows uses .ICM. "

I suggest you copy all of your ".icm" profiles to a new folder and change the ".icm" extension on the copies to ".icc", and then see if Printao8 will accept them.

I was going to suggest exactly that for the same reason. They should in fact be equally useful and usable. If PrinTao doesn't recognize them I would suggest discussing that with LSI tech support.

I will have to further test this later, but i took the last idea and changed the extension.  The customer option loaded it, and the new issues are that the only quality option is draft and there is a check box for print with finest details.  I also noticed that regardless of the paper, it does not offer a super b option.  The largest is Arch B (12x18).   I don't print borderless, so that may be a problem.  Not sure i am going to continue trying to get this to work, since i will ultimately have to waste some paper to test it.  The additional utility for me as a hobbyist may not be worth the additional effort.

Regarding the LSI tech support.  The tech was most likely calling me from Germany (the accent gave it away as well as the phone number).  I don't think he had deep expertise in Printao.  My impression is that they really focus on the scanner software.  Printtao seems like an after thought.

Thanks again for all the help.  If i make any more progress i will update the post.
