Nikon DL 18-50
« on: February 23, 2016, 08:22:43 pm »

Sounds like a great offering for both street and landscape.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/3646441843/dl-or-no-dl-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-nikon-dl-compacts

The AF of the 1 series is the fastest leaving aside the D4/1Dx sports camera, 20 fps will provide unique opportunities to capture a very exact moment.

Cheers,
Bernard

I was surprised it took so long for somebody to comment. If the 18-24 range is decent I will likely get it, if the entire range is decent I will definitely get it.

I expect the sensor it's decent. Good dynamic range at base iso would help a lot; get both the 18-50 with the 24-85 and you have a good lightweight hiking/travel combo (while still having a good range with either if one breaks).

Maybe because I have a RX1003 this camera doesn't excite me. The 24-500 does!
By self experience I know that the 1 inch sensor in favorable circumstances can yield amazing quality.
This combined with a 500mm reach sounds provocative!

I have a RX100 also, but the wide DL is positionned differently in my book.

Now, I was never able to get usable pics of moving children with a RX100, if the AF is per Nikon 1 series standards, even the medium zoom one could in fact be interesting.

Btw, there is a 3 pages thread already at FM.

Cheers,
Bernard

Seems like the 1 inch sensor is becoming the new standard for serious compacts.

I intended to play with the DL today at cP+ in Yokohama, but the queue was so long Nikon requested me not to wait... it was for sure one of the cameras generating the highest amont of interest across the show together with the Pentax K1 and new Sigma mirrorless.

In comparison I was able to put my hands on a Sony a6300 in 3 mins and to an Olympus Pen-F in 1. Both very nice cameras btw.

Cheers,
Bernard

Two friends of mine have already preordered. One ordered the 24-85 and one the 18-50. I'm leaning toward preordering the 24-85. It looks like June for delivery.

I think a smart move by Nikon to look to release 1 inch sensor compacts that actually offer something new rather than hoping slapping there brand on an RX100 remake alone would get sales.

The DL 18-50mm especially is a very pleasant surprise, I suspected that if the rumoured UWA 1 inch compact was true it would be more of a one trick pony but also having a range up to 50mm and a fast lens and potentially better AF/FPS makes for a very tempting all in one holiday camera.

In a way its a bit of an evil temptation for me to take holiday shooting less seriously, I sell landscapes for a living but really my core business is local stuff with traveling mostly still just holidays with the odd saleable shot that doesn't come close to meeting the cost of the trip most of the time.

I have a cheap second hand GXR + 28 & 50mm units that I take for city shooting along with my D800 but really no complete mirrorless alternative to the latter appeals. For one thing I like the handling/bulk of the D800 for my serious shooting so it would be an extra with the cost of most systems plus several lenses being too high. For another your still talking a system, the GXR units I can take having one in my pocket and the changes are easy but any mirrorless system that offers UWA to normal range also really means multiple lenses and a camera bag.

Any word on this?
I've recently went through some narrow canyons and did rock climbing and this would have been quite good, particularly with in-camera HDR to deal with high contrast situations.
I had a Fuji X-T1 with 10-24 that I've used almost exclusively hanging in a Think Tank pouch at my back but the DL would have been even more compact and easier to climb with. The extra 35 to 50 range was needed at times and probably I could have been ok without the 15-18 range.
Should be reasonably dust resistant though.

My usual shop here in Lisbon (Portugal) is accepting preorders for all DL cameras, so I suppose they will be available within the next month or so. Likely with handling units in Photokina?

The price for the 18-50 is 949 EUR; 24-500 is 998 EUR; and 24-85 is 765 EUR.
