New HDR sensor technology from Panasonic
« on: February 06, 2016, 10:30:28 pm »

This looks interesting - they're promising 100 times greater DR than current sensors, or six-and-a-half stops better.

I don't think Panasonic is going anywhere in the high-end stills world any time soon (especially with the lack of a high-end lens collection and, unlike with Sony, the lack of ability to develop one) but they could get a lot out of it by licencing the technology to Sony and Canon.

Either way, I wouldn't mind a >50MP sensor with 20 stops of dynamic range...

Sony at least had somewhere to start - they've been making full-frame, pro-standard A-mount lenses for years - and teamed up with Zeiss, yet they're still only getting there slowly. Displacing Canon and Nikon, with their established stable of high-grade lenses, is a tough job, and convincing Sigma, Zeiss and others to make high-grade lenses for E-mount is equally tough.

Panasonic is essentially starting from nowhere, apart from a few M43-sized consumer-grade lenses. They're teamed up with Leica, but not only need to break into the full-frame market, but displace Canon, Nikon and Sony, who all have big head starts against them.
