Radical and potentially trendsetting concept by Apple

http://connect.dpreview.com/post/8027168176/apple-patent-describes-use-of-curved-image-sensor-to-design-small-camera-module

Could this be applied also to larger (APS-C and FF) frame sensors?

Hi,

I don't think it makes a lot of sense. It wouldn't work with existing lenses. Yes, it would make lens design simpler, but lenses needed to be constructed with a field curvature matching the sensor.

With cell phone lenses it is a bit different. They need very high performance at low cost and with a small form factor.

Best regards
Erik

Sounds like a potentially good way forward for a camera with a fixed & purpose-designed lens.
