90 YO Dad wants to shoot Death Valley
« on: January 25, 2016, 01:01:38 pm »

For his 90th, my dad wanted me to take him to Death Valley on a photo tour. He is steady on his feet when he leaves his bifocals off ;) but not sure how he'll do at Mesquite Flats. Besides Dante's View, Zabriskie Point, Artist's Palette, Scotty's Castle, and Titus Canyon, any other suggestions that would not require extensive hiking? Will have a 4x4 truck to get around in. Staying at Furnace Creek Ranch.

You could drive out to the "Racetrack Playa" in your 4x4. Long drive and can be tough on tires but it might be worth it to see the "sliding stones".

I would be very, VERY careful of driving a personal vehicle to the racetrack. You would be better served singing on to one of the high clearance tour truck going to the playa. If you do break down, it will cost a lot of money getting a tow and fix. You are literally out in the middle of nowhere...

As far as where to go, Scotties Castle is probably a no go for a few years. One place to look at is the main playa north a bit from Mesquite...can't remember the milages but you might find some interesting scenes...

Otherwise the usual suspects are there: Dante's Peak (easy), Artist's Drive (easy if open), Death Valley Junction (interesting in a way) Devil's Golf course are pretty easy. Not much to shoot between 10AM and 2PM...time to hit the pool!
